The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has appointed Mr. Jo Scheuer as the organization's Country Director to Cambodia, said a press release on Tuesday.
Scheuer comes to Phnom Penh from New Delhi, India , where he has served as UNDP's Senior Deputy Resident Representative for the past three years, it said.
Scheuer looks forward to joining UNDP's managerial team and sees his appointment as evidence of Cambodia's growing importance, it said.
With newly created position at UNDP Cambodia, Scheuer believes the work of a Country Director is vital to the implementation of UN reform.
As Cambodia finds itself at a dynamic crossroads, with a burgeoning economy and untapped energy sector, Scheuer envisages a prosperous future for the country, said the release.
Throughout his 14 year career with UNDP, Scheuer has worked in Niger , Papua New Guinea , UNDP Headquarters in New York , Nepal and India.
"His outstanding leadership ability and history of managerial expertise covering everything from sustainable livelihoods, to human development, HIV/AIDS, environment and energy, and democratic governance, makes him a welcome addition to the team," the release added.
Born in Luxembourg in 1965, Scheuer studied in Germany and Switzerland, earning a master's degree in Applied Physical Geography. His wife Melinda Reid is a teacher, and together they have a 5-year-old daughter, Elija.
