Phnom Penh - Cambodian police were seeking a number of young men after they hunted down and shot the newly promoted deputy chief of military police of Phnom Penh, a senior police officer said Monday.

Phnom Penh Municipal Police Chief Touch Naroth said Lieutenant Colonel Reth Nika, 27, and two passengers had tried to outrun their assailants in a Mercedes down the city's main street before turning onto one of Phnom Penh's busiest roads Sunday evening and being caught in traffic. Nika then fled on foot into a nearby pagoda, Naroth said.

The attackers, who drove a sports utility vehicle, chased Nika inside the grounds of Wat Saravan, one of the city's oldest temples, and shot him five times in the head, hand and body, the police chief said. He is believed to have died instantly. Nika's passengers escaped, police said.

Police detained one man at the scene and are seeking at least two others, Naroth said.

Naroth said the motive appeared to be a personal dispute but investigations were continuing.

The car chase began near the capital's Independence Monument. Street 178, where Nika fled on foot, is one of the city's busiest streets and was full of local and foreign sightseers at the time of the attack.

Nika, who came from a prominent Cambodian business family, had risen through the ranks quickly despite his young age and had just been promoted from a senior provincial position in Kandal province.

Although security has improved rapidly in the capital since the war ended a decade ago and disgraced former Phnom Penh police chief Heng Pov was jailed last year, daring daylight assassination attempts are still not unknown.

Pov is serving 25 years in prison for the murder of a senior judge and was expected to face further charges, including in a number of murders and attempted murders.

of course assassins are daring, even in plain daylight. They aren't afraid of corrupt laws in Phnom Penh where senior officials themselves hire murderers and thugs to get what they want. Who could stop them? no the police. The only way is to armed and protect yourself. Cambodia is still a jungle full of barbarians.

Why these assilants go after Hok Lundy and Sar Kheng too? I want to see our Khmer heroes start to rise up against Ah Hun Sen regime to topple CPP regime from Cambodia land. When Hun Sen regime ends, the illigal Vietcongs in Tonle Sab and land will disappear also. Khmer need to get revenge that Hanoi fishermen beats Khmer fishermen in Khmer water off the coast of Kep yesterday. Go after Vietcong in Tonle Sab by burning down their water village.
