16-country representatives protest before Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok

Bangkok, 26 Oct 2007: Representatives from 16 Countries (Tibet, Bangladesh, Canada, Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Lao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor Leste) protested in front of the Myanmar Embassy on Sunday, October 21, to express solidarity with the Burmese people and to protest against the oppressive rule of military junta and condemn the ongoing violent repression of monks demonstrating against the government which have resulted in thousands of arrests, severe injuries and deaths.

The representatives of the 16 countries are in Bangkok to participate in the 11th Asian Training and Study Session (ATSS) for Human Rights defenders which was organised by Forum Asia for Human Rights Defenders. Around 10.30 am, the representatives of the above country protested in front of the Myanmar Embassy and in unison call for the democracy in Burma, release of Aung Sang Sui Kyi and other human rights defenders and stop crackdown on peaceful demonstrators.

As a part of the in house campaign during the three weeks training from 7-27 October, the participants from the 16 countries launched a new website: www.atss4hrd.wetpaint.com as part of their campaign for Burma issue and submitted a signed memorandum to Chinese Embassy, Russian Embassy and Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok. The memorandum call for the immediate release of all political prisoners including Aung San Sui Kyi, stop arbitrarily arresting civilians & human rights defenders, stop storming Buddhist monasteries and arresting monks, initiate democratic solution to solve the political stalemate and respect for religious freedom in Burma.

Apart from that the participant also filmed a short video and created animation, which will be distributed through youtube.com and websites. In the short video, the representatives of the 16 countries condemn the current military junta's oppressive rule and criticize the Chinese and Russian government for their double standard in dealing with the Burma Issue in international platform.

Anyhow, the Thai often only allowed a time limit for demonstration. Those people better to move their asses or be removed by polices for making Bankok looks like a rat's nest.
