The recent arrest of a well-known Russian businessman on charges of debauchery could mean the police are taking the problems of human trafficking and sexual exploitation more seriously. It could also mean they are looking to improve their standing in the eyes of the US, which puts out an annual report where Cambodia consistently scores poorly.
Either way, the practice is still pervasive, Lim Mony, a trafficking and child abuse expert for the rights group Adhoc, said Thursday.
Networks are strong, and tactics for the recruitment of women into the sex trade change quickly, she said, as a guest on "Hello VOA."
Cambodia remains on a US State Department watch-list for failing to show enough effort to curb human trafficking.

Tromfimov is charged with having sex with seven underage girls, one as young as 10, in the port city of Sihanoukville.
Despite his arrest, this year showed no signs that authorities made progress in curbing sex trafficking, Lim Mony said.
"In 2007 there is no sign that the very complicated issues declined," she said. "It is almost like last year."
She warned parents that sexual exploitation and human trafficking normally occur through friends and was therefore hard to catch.
"What is hard to fight…is that many of beer gardens, hotels and massage parlors legitimately turn their establishments into places for sex and trafficking," she said.
Foreigners coming to Cambodia to exploit children remained a concern for anti-trafficking groups, she said, appealing to parents not to let their children become exploited, not to allow them to beg in the streets "or do something that is risky to a child's future."

Bad behaviors can happen everywhere.
Especially, when peoples are less educated, they can be influenced easily to do such things.
Look at the incidents at Cambodia, for example the 1997 bombs at the parliament, is this trained by westerners. Of course, in Canada, We have shooting case in the parliament of Quebec or Ottawa, I don't remember the place exactly. I don't think the guy was trained to do such thing. It's can happen everywhere, except in Cambodia, it's happen too often.

Well, they don't have school to teach you how to drink Champagne either, 10:46, but when you hang out with your westerners Goddess long enough, you'll ultimately learnt everything from them, and then you bring it back to Cambodia and spread it all over the places. What is so mystery about that?
I love Cambodia and its people, in fact I am married to a Cambodian and have three Cambodian step-children. But I cannot support all these recurring statements that all things bad come from the West. Khmer started killing each other long before Westerners even set foot in the country, and there have been rapes and pedophilia throughout time. As for the present and pedophilia, I recommend that all those ignorant folks read the newspaper Koh Santhepheap to learn about what Khmer men, sometimes fathers, do to their children. Please lay off blaming Westerners for problems that affect each and every country. Why are Westerners in the forefront of the news all time? Because they make for good headlines and serve to instill a bad conscience in the West so they may be more willing to help with foreign aid, not to mention entire NGOs that depend on donations from Westerners. Just go back on KI-Media. There is hardly any week without an NGO publishing another report on the state of prostitution and child sex in Cambodia. What about the Koreans, and the Chinese that come to Cambodia to buy virgins because they believe it acts as aphrodisiac? I beg to differ. Thailand has never been a Western colony, whereas all surrounding countries were. Pedophilia is not a Western phenomenon but a world problem. Why in Cambodia, Thailand, etc.? Because these are highly corrupt countries with a weak legal system, though Thailand is taking steps in the right direction. Cambodia is slowly following suit. But to say it is only Westerners is plain wrong. Anybody who is somewhat knowledgable about this will confirm it.

Anyway, to be constructive with all this, allow me to briefly explain how our culture detered child abuse. Among other the thing, such as faith, ..., the main factor here is that our family structure must be closely tied as a long chain of generation to generation in order to survive. This is unlike the west that every member of the family is independent of each other. I mean the parent don't need their children to survive,..., and the chidren don't need their children to survive, but that is not our case. We need each other to survive. If anyone is stupid enough to abuse his children, he will most likely end dying alone with a miserable live. But in the west, however, if you abuse your children, it won't effected you a bit because you have social security to take care of you already. Do you see what I am saying?

You are right about the difference in the so-called family values, but you are also painting the ideal picture. Things are changing very rapidly in Asia and the young generation will take a different look at the traditional system. As for child abuse, again, read Koh Santhpheap and if you live in Cambodia check with your neighbors and friends about the sale of virgins - and they are all under 16 believe me - and who the customers are. Don't close your eyes to reality because of pride.

Cambodia was only spared those influences because of its long isolation from the outside world. Until 1991 there weren't even any direct flights from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, you always had to fly via Saigon. Of course, we never heard anything about what was going inside Cambodia before 1990 or so.

As for our family value, it is not ideal picture, but realistic.
