Phnom Penh - Security in the Cambodian capital was ramped up as the country prepared for the arrival of North Korean Prime Minister Kim Yong Il, police sources said Wednesday.

Interior Ministry officials said up to 5,000 extra police would be on duty during the four-day visit. Kim - who is no relation to the country's supreme leader, Kim Jong Il - was scheduled to arrive at Phnom Penh International Airport Thursday morning after visiting Vietnam and Malaysia.

He is to meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen and have an audience with King Norodom Sihamoni as well as pay courtesy calls on Senate leader Chea Sim and National Assembly President Heng Samrin, the Foreign Ministry said.

He was also expected to sign trade and shipping deals with the ministers of transport and commerce.

Although there had been speculation he might stay at the Royal Palace because of a longstanding friendship between his family and that of former king Norodom Sihanouk, palace sources dismissed those claims Wednesday, saying he would instead be staying in an unnamed five-star hotel.

Kim is visiting Cambodia at the invitation of Hun Sen.
