Khmer Krom community asks Hun Sen to consider Monk Tim Sakhorn’s case09 October 2007

The Khmer Kampuchea-Krom Community (KKC) in Cambodia wrote a letter asking prime minister Hun Sen to review and reconsider the defrocking case of Monk Tim Sakhorn, the former abbot of the Phnom Den North pagoda, located in Kirivong district, Takeo province. The KKC accused that the defrocking of Monk Tim Sakhorn was illegal.
Thach Setha, KKC President, told RFA on Tuesday that: “We ask the prime minister to reconsider this case because the investigation report he received from government agents is completely opposite to the facts obtained by NGOs investigations, in particular (the government report is) opposite to the investigation conducted by Khmer Kampuchea Krom organizations and associations. Therefore, we will send in an attachment, all the documents based on our own investigations, and the various proofs for the prime minister to review and reconsider, in order to provide justice for Venerable Tim Sakhorn.”
Thach Setha’s reaction above was made after Hun Sen reported to the king on the information report (he received) about the defrocking of Monk Sakhorn, the former abbot of the Phnom Den North pagoda.
According to the copy of Thach Setha’s letter, dated 08 October, sent to prime minister Hun Sen, Thach Setha indicated that former Monk Tim Sakhorn is a legal Cambodian citizen who was recognized by the local authority.
Thach Setha’s letter added that the accusation that Monk Tim Sakhorn participated in 2 demonstrations against the Cambodia-Vietnam friendship, is simply not true. The former abbot never did anything contrary to the religious rules.
Khieu Kanharith, minister of information and government spokesman, reacted by saying that Hun Sen cannot reconsider the request.
Khieu Kanhartih added: “First of all, it’s (his) problem of ordaining (monks) without asking the opinion from the cult department at all. There are a lot of cases (like that), it’s not just the issue of political propaganda, in reality it’s about the religious rule (violation) which is severe. It’s not the problem about him participating in this movement or that movement, the movement is sometimes part of his right also, but the main problem was that he didn’t listen to anybody, and he ordained (anybody) as he wanted, this is not right. In the past, he has been warned several times, he didn’t listen.”
Former Abbot Tim Sakhorn was ordered defrocked by Tep Vong, the supreme patriarch, and accused of violating the Buddhist rule by undermining the solidarity between Cambodia and Vietnam, and by using the pagoda to serve as a political propaganda center, thereby affecting the Buddhist rule. These charges came out of Tep Vong’s letter dated 16 June.
Currently Monk Tim Sakhorn is being jailed in Vietnam’s An Giang province, after he was arrested by the Cambodian authority and deported to Vietnam on 30 June.

The Counter-letter no. 39 Sâs Chôr Nor . Kor Bor Chor, of the Prime minister Hun Sèn dated 06th Jully 2007 and the decision of both houses of the parliament have enough condition to expunge the words from the article of the Bill of Constitution has not been enacted; and the Khmer aborigines in Kampuchea Southerner have been put out of our position.
After the failure of the many Khmer representatives, the reaction of 12 millions of Khmer aborigines Initiated by the KHMER BUDDHIST LEADERS has automatically arisen against the act of expunging the “KHMER -KROM” .

According to the Theory of dependent origination of the LORD BUDDHA, everything after many time of changing, it comes to it ORIGINE - after death, it comes to birth. The Word “KHMER”experiencing changing for many time such as Khôm, Khâm, Khâ, Khêk, Khmé,Khmuk, Ko Mé Ruk, Ko Mé Ra, Khémarak, Khémra and: today it is eliminated. So depending on the Constitution of 1993, we, the sons and daughters of BUDDHA, return to our ORIGINE, that is to say we are to be what we are “KHMER” and our Committee has also used the word “KHMER” to the distinction.

To begin the Struggle, we have to face a lot of suffering, but we, with affable character passed by our ancestor, to be faithful with our beloved Motherland -- Our Khmer people want to live harmoniously with peaceful atmosphere and not mixed with any political turmoil.
Besides, because of keeping transquility and moderation, our KHMER aborigines in Nokor Chass have willingly kept indifferent with what become of our nationality and religion -- The word “KHMER” in that time ALLEGIANCE for Nokor Chass, but, then we become “ MIÊN “and then becomes “ VIÊT-GÓC-MIÊN “ in the era of Terror, Oppressor, Annexer Ngo-Ðinh-Diêm, Nguyen Van Thieu and so on,,,,,, Today, unfortunately our KHMER ABORIGINES in Nokor Chass have been painfully assimilated -- The words Viêt-Góc-Miên have been expunged.
To examine the History of Nokor Chass we found that the unyielding example of our heroes of Nokor Chass is sufficient to clarify the survival of Nationality and Religion.
With the digninity of indomitable tradition; the Empower people would over thrown the dictatorial regime. To do such anything is to clarify that our Nation is incarnation of love, Justice and Freedom.
But, unfortunately that opinion of ours has been put out of consideration since the Constitution enacted.
However, it is the time for the moderate KHMER in Nokor Chass must struggle, the Committee KHMER BUDDHIST Leaders originated in Nokor Chass Struggling to defense KHMER position has come to birth in accordance with the Constitution, moderation and Non-Violence with the aim of maintaining KHMER position.
So, in view of survival of of Nationality and Religion, and the tense situation with the danger of Communist, we request the Government to reinstate our race with term “KHMER” aboriginates in NoKor Chass.

With the above standpoint, we, after having sent many letters awaited the good-will with great patience but the Government still keep indifferent. Therefore our Struggle, we may say, has come out of the indifference of the Government.
Again, so as to restore the Situation of the Country, we, the real people of the KHMER, Sincerely request the leaders of Nation to re-examine to release Bhikhu Tim Sakhorn and justify our aspiration; that is to reinstate our KHMER Position by using the term “KHMER” aborigines in Nokor Chass .
