Co-ruling Funcinpec still opens PM candidacy for Cambodian Prince Ranariddh
Cambodian Prince Norodom Ranariddh can still be prime minister candidate of the co-ruling Funcinpec Party for the general election in 2008, if he returns to the party without arguments against its former decisions, an official said on Wednesday.
"If the prince comes back (from his current overseas self-exile) , we all will consider handing over party presidency to him and he will become our premier candidate for the 2008 general election," said Nhiek Bun Chhay, secretary general of Funcinpec.
However, he said, the preconditions are that he recognizes the outcome of the party's congress on October 18, 2006, during which the prince was ousted as party president due to carelessness of the party's affairs.
Meanwhile, party spokesman Nov Sowathearo said that Funcinpec is preparing its latest congress from Oct. 18-19 to choose prime minister candidates and expand its steering committee.
There are four or five candidates who will join the competition for party presidency and party president will become premier candidate for the general election in 2008, he said, adding that present president Keo Puth Rasmey and other members of the royal family are the choices.
Funcinpec party was established by retired King Norodom Sihanouk in 1981. In the 1990s, it started co-ruling the kingdom together with the Cambodian People's Party.
Earlier this year, Ranariddh, son of Sihanouk, was sentenced to 18 months in jail in absentia by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court over corruption charges filed by Funcinpec. Before the verdict was made, the prince left Cambodia and has stayed overseas ever since.
