Hun Sen urges Myanmar Junta not to repeat what he and his henchmen did in Cambodia in 1997

Cambodia urges Myanmar to exercise "maximum tolerance" toward protesters

AP

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - Cambodia's prime minister called Wednesday for the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations to play a bigger role in finding a democratic solution to the crisis in Myanmar and urged the junta there to refrain from further violence.

Hun Sen said the involvement of Myanmar's revered Buddhist monks in recent pro-democracy protests showed that problems in the country had reached a new level of seriousness.

"ASEAN should be playing a more active role," Hun Sen told reporters, proposing that the bloc form a "troika" that can "assist in finding a solution to the problems in Myanmar."

Such a troika, Hun Sen said, should be led by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, whose country is currently the rotating chair of ASEAN, and joined by the previous and future leaders of the bloc _ meaning Malaysia and Thailand.

Simmering hatred for the Myanmar military's 45-year rule exploded in mid-August after it hiked fuel prices by as much as 500 percent, a crushing burden in the impoverished nation. The marches soon ballooned into mass pro-democracy demonstrations led by the nation's Buddhist monks.

The military crushed the protests on Sept. 26 and 27. Hundreds of monks and civilians were detained. The government says 10 people were killed in the violence. But dissident groups put the death toll at up to 200. They say 6,000 people were detained.

"We would like to see Myanmar exercise the maximum tolerance and refrain from using force to crackdown on demonstrators," Hun Sen said.

He added that Myanmar rulers should also "try to carry on the process of reconciliation, solve the problems and move toward democratization, peace and respect of human rights in Myanmar."

Hun Sen and his government have also faced international criticism for violating human rights.

In late 2005, Hun Sen had a half dozen critics jailed for several months on defamation charges for criticizing him. The critics were released following international and domestic condemnation of his government's actions.

ASEAN consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The members rotate chairmanship of the grouping according to alphabetical order of their countries.

Well, if the problem started with full price, then perhaps, we should asked the Burmese government to cut the increase by half and meet the people objection half way and done with it.

i think dr. hun sen and all khmer leaders, including the opposition, should unite to condemn western propaganda for inciting the demonstrations. westerners have been inviting buddhist leaders to their countries to brainwash the head monks. we all should work to expose the westerners' evil agenda. the white devils are laughing at this matter while dr. hun sen and other asian leaders are working their butts off trying to find a diplomatic solution for the bloodshed.

Great heroic King Norodom Sihanouk will become a confrontation between Cambodia and the United Nations in the trial process for former Khmer Rouge [KR] leaders

I agree with you 100%, 5:14, but when you are poor it is not too easy to block your temptation from the colonialist's moneys, despite for sure that this will weaken our brotherhood relationship with the Burmese in the future. What is a shame?

5:14! It is good to unite all Khmers. This is a good idea but to expose westerners is a problem.

The should use the word "expose" with the neighboring countries such as Vietcong and Siam. The Vietcong has been being flowed into Srok Khmer daily.

Come on dude, that is all propaganda.

If what you said is true, then we would have seen the population of Vietnam decrease and the population of Cambodian exploded. There is no such report anywhere.

What you see in Cambodia can be deceiving because many Ah Khmer-Yuons look so much like Yuon. Lot of them are good hard working people, but some of them are a bastard.

And I tell you how most of them got into Cambodia. When Vietnam came to liberated Cambodia, they used many Ah Khmer-Yuons in their force. Vietnam are not stupid enough to use all Vietnamese soldiers to liberate Khmers. Anyhow, after their mission completed not all of them left because they don't want to go back to the communist country; so, they defected and stayed in Cambodia. And sometime after, those people send to get their family and friend over and we end up with about 2-2.5 million at that time. Now, their number is about 3-3.5 millions. And that is all. There is no new mass of vietnamese hoping the fence, just one or two, now and then.

Hey, call it whatever you like because you people are blinded by you westerner masters. But to us, we were prisoners of murderous KR regime and Vietnam bailed us out of it, and now we are free. If that is not liberation, I don't know what is.

It all starts with 'self.'

Khmer gov't must rid themself off from VNamese master.
Then, it can tell the Burmese gov't to rid themself off from the Chinese.

So Hun Sen must rid himself off from kowtowing to VN boss before he started mouthing off to his dictatorr-friend Gen. Than Shwe to take it easy upon his own Buddhist monks and people in Burma.

China used to play a major role in the KR affairs. How many lives cost?

China is now playing a major role in Burma. What else will happen?

VN has been and is still playing a major role in the Cambodia gov't affairs.

So before HS could start telling other people to clean up he must clean up his house "himself" first.

stupid people supports ignorant leader. Smart people always rebel for the best. Stupid people accept what they have been told by their leaders.

For decades Dr. Hun have been telling Cambodian people Vietnam has been the savior of Cambodia. And for decades since his government come about, every notice of Vietnam border encroachment and violation of Khmer villagers, they say, " we haven't got the news yet!" Yep. Igorant, stupid, and liars.

I feel for some Khmer, these Khmer are all over the place, they're in U,S, and in Cambodia, and in other western countries. They're everywhere...sigh*

well, people get smart you know. Some people stay stupid. But thats because they keep on following stupid people. Oh well, if you don't want to educate yourselve and believe what your boss and big man tell you, then thats your pathetic life to live.

You'll die with that knowledge. As long as you're happy. That's all it matters right?
