Phnom Penh - Top North Korean officials were scheduled to pay an official visit to Cambodia next month, a North Korean embassy official said Monday. The Phnom Penh-based embassy official, who declined to be named, said the visiting delegation was expected to include Supreme People's Assemby (SPA) leader Choe Tae Bok. The SPA is the equivalent of North Korea's parliament.

He said the group was expected to meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen and other top Cambodian officials.

Although the official declined to comment on the purpose of the visit, scheduled to begin November 1 and last four days, a diplomatic source close to the embassy said the politicians would hold bilateral talks aimed at strengthening relations.

Cambodia is one of a few countries which has retained warm diplomatic relations with North Korea. Former king Norodom Sihanouk pays frequent visits to the secretive communist state, and the royal bodyguard unit is made up of North Korean agents - a gift to Sihanouk from late North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung.
