Animal-rights group asks Cambodian PM to bar KFC

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- An international animal-rights organization has urged Prime Minister Hun Sen to prevent the U.S.-based fast-food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) from opening in Cambodia, claiming that it threatens Cambodian culture, people's health and leads to animal abuse, local media said Wednesday.

In a letter to Hun Sen dated Tuesday, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said tourists do not come to Cambodia to eat at international fast-food chains, the Cambodia Daily newspaper said.

Such outlets "erode culture, as they make one country resemble every other country," PETA Asia-Pacific Director Jason Baker wrote in the letter.

The intensive farming required to supply KFC outlets would also increase the risks of food-born diseases caused by salmonella and E coli and the likelihood of a bird-flu epidemic, Baker wrote.

"We hope you will act to protect Cambodia's health and culture by refusing to allow KFC and the abusive farming practices it perpetuates from entering the country," he wrote.

Cambodian Information Minister and government spokesman Khieu Kanharith confirmed that the Ministry of Commerce had granted KFC authorization to operate in the country, the newspaper said.

KFC will open outlets in Cambodia's three major tourist centers: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap town and Sihanoukville, Khieu Kanharith said.

I don't think the US based fast food KFC will do good in Cambodia at this moment because we don't have as many middle class people as they have in the US to keep KFC alive.

Nonetheless, their present here show as an indicator that they foresee middle-class to grow in Cambodia. Otherwise, they would not try be here in the first place. At least, that much is certain.

what's the number of tourist to Cambodia a year now man? its not like 3 million people! Can make it with just the tourist alone.

And mind you they are haversting the chicken okay not making the food. So our place would be more vulnerable things like bird flu outbreak if they don't do it right.

Are you saying chicken after sex as good as cigarette after sex, 10:47? I mean I don't see much difference: while chicken is cooked with fire, cigarette is also lit with fire if you know what I mean.

Please note millions of chicks raise unhuman in the congested/dirty cages have no room to move. Pumping with hormone food, if you see how Raise farmer ways are more human. Please boycut KFC, promote local chicken food chain that will benefit to Cambodian farmers instead.

Yeah, but who said we must used hormone and confine chicken to tight space. All of our chickens here is raised under democracy with rule-of-law, lot of freedom to roam around and to express themselves 24/7, and the whole nine yard.

Oh yes, I wouldn't hurt those little chicks that are hanging on to Sara Jane. If the floor is hard for her to sit on for a long time I will certainly volunteer to be her soft cushion! Of course, to be fair on both sides I will also be stark-naked.

If KFC has the backing of Hun Sen's families or relatives then he will have no problem with that. As some Yuon commentators here would yell in his support: we want jobs, jobs, jobs for Yuons in Cambodia!!!

Yep, you better to believe it.
