PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - A late goal by Mamedaly Karadanov gave Turkmenistan a 1-0 away win over Cambodia in the first leg of their 2010 World Cup first-round qualifying match Thursday.
Karadanov scored in the 85th minute, despite Cambodia having controlled much of the game without scoring opportunities.
Turkmenistan will host the return leg on Oct. 28.
There are 19 two-legged ties in the first round of Asian World Cup qualifiers. The eleven best-ranked winners join Australia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Iran in the third round. The other eight first-round winners go into four two-legged ties, with the winners also progressing to the third round.
The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa.
