VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam and Cambodia have agreed on more than 50 positions on the map for planting landmarks between the two countries.
The two sides also agreed on the principles to define on-the-field landmark positions during the third technical session of the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Committee for Land Border Demarcation and Landmark Planting held in Phnom Penh from October 22-27.
The principles will serve as legal and technical basis for border demarcation teams to follow.
The Vietnamese delegation to the meeting was led by Nguyen Hong Thao, Vice Chairman of the National Border Committee. The Cambodian delegation was headed by Huon Savang, Deputy Director of the Secretariat of the Ministers Council’s National Agency Responsible for Border Issues.

Vietnam thinks that hun sen and the cpp will eraicate the border problem without any contesting from the Cambodian citizens. No matter how many markers or how fast they are being installed, Khmers will always remember what belongs to them. The border line can be move, the markers can be pull out from the ground, and the deceptive treaties can be burn and not comply to. They may have everything under their control at this time, but many people who love our land will die to fight for it. vietnam may have cpp the and their children as their puppets, but they don't have half of the country under their grip. Therefore, I don't think the cpp can give vietnam the peace of mind like they wanted by affiliating with the cpp. If they truely want peace, they have to break off from the cpp. Otherwise, it will be like Isreal and Palestine. There will always be chaos. So that it won't be a win/win situation for Cambodia and vietnam. If vietnam wants to do harm to Cambodia, Cambodia will do harm to vietnam.

The total population of Cambodia is about 14 millions, and that included a couple million Ah Khmer Yuons, about a million Chineses, and a bunch of others. Accordingly, when you do the math 14M - 5M - 2M -1M -.5M = 4.5 Millions Khmers left in Cambodia. Therefore, what you are saying is is 2 out 3 people in Cambodia are foreigners. Yes, we should do the best we can to finish the demarcation project then focus on the security of the region. We must not allow any foreigner to bully us around as they did in the past.

A Viet historian actually wrote a history book based on facts, but it was banned by the Viet leadership. The war between Vietnam and the Khmer Rouge's Democratic Kampuchea began shortly after the fall of Saigon. On May 1, 1975, a team of Khmer Rouge soldiers raided Phu Quoc Island against little or no Vietnamese resistance, and then executed more than five hundred Vietnamese civilians on Tho Chu Island. Angered by the Khmer Rouge's aggression, Hanoi launched a counter-attack that resulted in the liberation of those islands by Vietnamese forces. The battle over Phu Quoc was a cause of concern for the newly-established Socialist Republic of Vietnam as the country was challenged by a new enemy at a time when relations with the People's Republic of China began to deteriorate due to Vietnam's ideological alignment with the Soviet Union. That concern was further strengthened by the presence of Chinese advisors to Pol Pot's regime and increasing shipments of military hardware to Kampuchea's armed forces.
Following the raids on Phu Quoc and Tho Chu Islands the Khmer Rouge conducted two major incursions into Vietnam. The first attack occurred in April 1977, when regular units of the Khmer Rouge army advanced 10km into Vietnam, occupying some parts of An Giang Province where it massacred a large number of Vietnamese civilians. The second attack was in September of the same year. This time they were able to advance 150km into Vietnam. In retaliation, six divisions of the Vietnam People's Army invaded Cambodia on December 31, 1977. The Vietnamese army advanced as far as Neak Luong and later withdrew, taking with them some key Khmer Rouge figures, including future Prime Minister Hun Sen. The invasion was intended only as a "warning" to the Khmer Rouge. The Vietnamese offered a diplomatic solution to the border conflict that would require the establishment of a demilitarized zone along the border, but the offer was rejected by Pol Pot and fighting resumed.
