Phnom Penh: Cambodian-Chinese Agreement to Bring on Metered Cabs Services

Phnom Penh, November 12, 2007

The Municipality of Phnom Penh and Chinese company Global (Cambodia) Trade Development Co. Ltd, concluded an agreement on metered taxis services in Phnom Penh on November 6.

Nhem Sarorn, chief of Phnom Penh public works service, and Chinese Company President Hu Guang Xi signed the 20-year agreement to bring 300 cabs to Phnom Penh streets over the next five years.

Governor Kep Chuktema, who presided over the signing ceremony, said the company would provide a high quality service.

For the first step, 60 taxis will be operating in the capital by early next year, according to an official of the Phnom Penh Municipality. Three years after, the number of taxis will be increased to 100, and five year later to 300, he added.

Under the terms of the deal, the company is to invest six million U.S. dollars in taxi transportation, said Kep Chuktema.

The company hoped to employ from 700 or 1,000 people and felt that serving Phnom Penh was an enticing prospect, said Chinese company president Hu Guang Xi.

300 cabs in the next 5 years is very low. We got to do a lot more to reduce the yearly jobs deficit. I will go for 30,000+ cabs for the entire country in the next 5 years instead. Remember, we are racing against inflation.

Stop living in denial, 10:44. If we don't know how to run the country, we would not be one of the fastest growing countries on the planet.

This is the way uneducated/Youn Hanoi is operating the country by Kep Chuktema. This stupid PP major doesn't know how to operate the city of less than 1 million. How much money will he pocket in his bank account?

If I'm PP major, I'll try to get Cambodia company to design and build our own transportation like Tuk Tuk, but not to make a deal with the foreign company. This way we can have more jobs for Cambodia people.

What are these stupid idiots? Sell and sign every things with the foreign companies. Next time Kep you sign your wife and daughter to foreigner also.

Stupid Kep!!!!

This stupid chinese might lost his money in this scam with Kep. Khmer people won't take your taxi by Chinese or Vietnamese. We'll take Khmer Taxi.

Yeah, but that is because the local are too poor to afford the remorq. It is only for middle classes and tourists, and to create self-employed jobs for the drivers.

As for manufacturing our own remorq, we will have to be industrialized first; otherwise we will still have to purchase most of the metal components from outside such as the weel, spring, frame, shaft and bearing, foam to make seat, ..., but I am sure we can hack the wooden finishing....

Most [ barang ] tourist will tell you that the Cambodian Tuk-Tuk is the best way to travel around in the city . They are much better than the Thai design tuk tuk.

I haven't rode in a tuk-tuk for ages. Actually, I even forgot what it feel like. I preferred the cyclo because it is nice and quiet without any motor roaring in my ear and the smell of the gas fume. I can't stand it.

The Khmer Tuk-Tuks in Phnom penh have been build without standard size. Some have medium size, some are long.
At Chbar Ampou you can see "long tuk-Tuk"like a train, built to carry 20 to 30 low paid workers. But it is a kind of dangerous mean of transport.
The Municipality must ban long Tuk-Tuk and other Minibus that oveload passengers.
Security first!

Oh yeah, now I know what you are talking about, 4:55. I have seen a few of those long tuk-tuk in the countryside. I don't think they are dangerous because the driver is very careful. Keep in mind, if the people get hurt, the driver is out of business.

They should invest in public transportation. Cambodia needs one now... We don't need cheap taxis china. I doubt it very much that it will contribute anything but chaos. What is taxi transportation?

We will, but right now the government can't barely paid it civil servant. Thus, it will be up to the private sector to invest in transportation.
