SINGAPORE - CAMBODIA will build a rail link to Thailand after it received US$80 million (S$116 million) in funds from the Asian Development Bank and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Cambodia's transport minister said on Friday.
Work on the 48km connection between Sisophon in Cambodia and Poipet near the Thai border will start early next year and be completed by 2010, said Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol.
The US$80 million funding will also cover improvements to other parts of the Cambodian railway system, he told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of transport ministers from the 10-member Association of South-east Asian Nation, or Asean.
The link between Cambodia and Thailand is part of plans for a 5,500 km railway linking Singapore to Kunming, which was was first proposed by Asean in 1995.
The project, which envisages connecting domestic rail networks to form a continuous link from Singapore to Kunming in China, is aimed at easing travel between various Southeast Asian countries and China.
Besides the connection to Thailand, Cambodia will also have to build 257 km of tracks linking its capital Phnom Penn to Loc Ninh in Vietnam.
Mr Sun Chanthol said the Vietnam rail link will cost around US$500 million and his country was seeking funding for the project.

Sound much better.
Yeah, and LOL, here we got $80 millions for 48km worth of track, but not long ago, the government seeking a private investor to rebuild over 600 km of rotten old track with just $50 millions. Isn't that is ridiculous?
Hey! Hun Sen doesn’t owe anything to ADB after he pockets the money and it is the dirt poor Cambodian people, their children and great grand children who will owe the ADB!
Hun Sen outsmart dirt poor Cambodian people again! Ahahhahah
Come on dude, that is a wild accusation. Is doesn't do anyone any good but paint the entire country black to future potential investors. I hope you're happy with your accomplishment.
Stop doind buisness with the Thaicong.
Get our lands back first.
Why do we have to get it back for? we have a heck of a time managing what we have now. Plus, the thai are not putting any restriction on anyone who want to visit any area in Thailand.
As in usual, Khmers won't benefit any money of the projects.
I hope that a same project will not be done between Cambodia and Vietnam : we will have to face the vietcong invasion.
This is a good move for the society. We do need infrastructures badly in order for us to catch up with the rest of the world. CAMBODIA ROADS ARE LIKE PIE CRUSTS. Perhaps rails system will better the society by transporting goods/services more efficiently. NO COUNTRY IS ENTIRELY BY ITSELF. And so, we need each other to survive.
ALSO, COUNTRY WILL PROSPER WITH GOOD GOVERNANCE.

Sah Touk, brother!
To 12:51 AM
Our gouvernment are not working for the Cambodia.
Just look at the Angkor Watt temple, there are many tourists but who earn the monies ?
It is a vietcong, a Hun Sen's friend ,who is the owner even if our Kings had build it for us.
Khmers people remain poors as usual.
What you say is right but Khmers can not earn anything.
If we do buisness with the vietcong, we will help their country to prosper and they can easily invade Cambodia to fulfill the Ho chi min's dream and then they will kill all khmers like the Chams.
Our destiny is very hard dude .
What? You got it all backward, 4:29. Ankor Watt is a billions dollars econony. hundreds of thousands people got jobs from it. What exactly do you want? just spit it out, will ya?
I don't give a fuck about what AH HUN SEN want to do to Cambodia but as long as he doesn't pass on the debt to the next generation to pay for it!
Cambodia can't no longer afford to accumulated all kind of debt from around the world and leave it to the next generation and it is the Cambodian people within this generation who will pay for it because it is them who use the fucken money!
From economist point of view, the more debt Cambodia has and the more it will affect Cambodia economically in the long run!
Okay, if debt is your only concern, we'll take care of it. Don't panic. Just sit back and learn from the masters, okay?
Animal Viet troller @7:53AM must know that I am just like your shadow...I'll be everywhere you are here on KI-Media. I am on and in your face until you disappear from KI-Media. You animal Viet troller@10:52 AM that pretends to be khmer must give up now. Go home Viet troller!
BTW, the cost for 78km double tracking from Chachongsao to Laem Chabang Port (Eastern line in Thailand) is about 170 million US$ ... with 100 Lb steel rail, monoblock concrete sleepers, 25-30 cm-thick ballast with max speed of 120 kph ....
Yeah, that sounds very nice and durable and provide lot of headroom into the future. It's time to kiss the old Frenchy railroad goodbye.
Shoddy construction is underway and the old Frenchy railroad might still be useful in the meantime! Ahhahahha
It's possible to keep it going, but it will be costly. Just think of it as a car. Once it get to a certain point, it is better to scrap it than to pump money into it.
