French company plans to operate trams in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- A French firm has said it plans to operate trams in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, and Siem Reap to help reduce the number of traffic jams and ease air pollution, local media reported Monday.

Jean Lousiv Menuel, president of Alstom, presented his company's plan to run trams in Phnom Penh and later in Siem Reap province during a recent meeting between a French business delegation and Phnom Penh Municipal Governor Kep Chuktema, the Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper said.

The tram railways will maintain the environment and beauty of the cities, Jean Lousiv Menuel was quoted as saying.

According to the plan, a railway to be called Tranway will connect the outskirts of Phnom Penh to its downtown, from Phnom Penh International Airport to the center.

Kep Chuktema offered his support to the plan, saying that he hopes it will help reduce traffic jams in the city just as the number vehicles on the roads is markedly increasing.

The municipality will cooperate with Alstom to carry out a feasibility study, he said.

Yes, I love the "Tranway" idea too, but we must balance this idea with the automotive economy to see which will benefited our people the most and just go with that.

That is better than Thai and Vietnam are the middleman for developing the transportations for Cambodia ,go ahead we have nothing to lose we already lost.

No, we shouldn't make any decision based on who the middleman is.

The thaicong and the vietcong are middlemen or less.
In Asia we can trust Japanese,Indonesian, Chinese, Singaporean, Malaysian.

All the fucken congestion are due to poor planning and future projection which allowed all kind of run away construction and the fucken streets are too small and too narrow to do anything and it has become a death trap!

This new TRANWAY isn’t going to improve anything and it will be just another add on to all the existing junks!

There are too many designs flaw under corrupted Vietcong slave government and it will like that for many more years to come until the next government come to power and force team of designers to solve the congestion problem from different perspective!

It is impossible to cross a street in around psar tmey et psar sorya (Phnom penh).
The drivers are not respecting the stop fire.
The solution is to place more policemen but they are corrupted.
So what can we do with a land of poverties and corruptions?

If the Khmer Rouge has the will power to kill 2 million Cambodian people and I am sure the current government that came from the same background will have the same will power to solve anything!

Too much corruption combine with the lack of will power have contribute many of the problems in Cambodian society!

The governor must clear the side walks from vendors and keep them cleaned so that tourists can enjoy the beauty of city by foot. Foreign tourists are complaining of dirt, smell and the relentless kid vendors. Check http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Cambodia/blogs-page-1.html. Phnom Penh is the dirtiest city world if not Aisa.

French's transportation?:) Sure! If Mr.Phnom Pehn's Governor gave you a hard time, please come to Battambang o.k? Help us reorganizing the city and did you forget Psean Dek French? or The Iron bridge in the heart of the city? It needs repaired so badly. Replacing it with a new one would be fantastic! Psean Dek, of course is French from head to toe, but for us The native people of Battambang, It is ours as much as yours. The Eiffel Tower in Paris would love to have something similar to it somewhere else in the world and there is no better place than here. We definitely definitely think so. Psean Dek had millions of our fine memories in it. Please come to Cambodia and also come to Battambang! Love with all our hearts and thank you in advance French!

Okay, if you going to do Battambong, well mind do Sihanoukville also. However, the materials used in Sihanoukville should be high grade and rust resistance because the atmosphere is very salty there.

dear 1.10pm,

dont forget that we were under French for almost a century, in French eye cambodia is only the rice field of Indochina, if french supported cambodia, they should give Khmer krom back to cambodia not to Youn or at least should it be independent stage as it is before french arrived.

They don't, but what can be gain from a non-friendship relation? If it means benificial to both sides, why wasting time? Let's talk building and not destruction here.

By the way, The Governor's Mansion in the Battambang, whose signature is that? Is it you French? or The British? It's so rotten nowaday. Please don't forget that The United States has great contruction companies which could change everything over a matter of months. Just so you know that we did not mind Those sexy Sky Scrapers American Style at all, but let's just renew our friendship first. French has magnificent taste in arts. This can only enrich Khmer's image. You're very welcome here!
