SINGAPORE - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Sunday rejected the imposition of sanctions against the military government in Myanmar, saying they hurt the civilian population but not the generals.
"Economic sanctions are not good and would not make the leaders of Myanmar die," Mr Hun Sen told a business forum in Singapore on the eve of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
"It is more of a disaster for the civilians. So one should not play the game of sanctions," the Cambodian prime minister said.
The ASEAN talks are expected to focus on the situation in member state Myanmar following its crackdown on pro-democracy protests, led by Buddhist monks, which triggered international outrage.
The United States and the European Union imposed tougher sanctions against Myanmar's rulers in the wake of September's violence, which left at least 15 people dead, according to a UN rights envoy who visited the country last week.
ASEAN countries have come under mounting pressure to take action against Myanmar but the bloc has repeatedly refused, citing its policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of member states.

Sanction is definitely a "no no" for our brother (Burmese) to me.
I must admit that Hun Sen's sanctions comments is right this time. The situation in myanmar are similar to the Khmer Rough regime in 1975 closing door to outsider and the way the police/army handle the demonstrators are a mirror to those of PM Hun Sen tactic in his 1997 Coup...where many civalian & monks die and the US and EUR or other did nothing, unlike China & Vietnam they help Hun Sen in the background to beat it own people and China now help Myannmar too..!!!
Yes, they should not sanction against good people, like Hun Sen, for just getting rid of evils from their land.
It is critically impertive that the world leaders must resolutely not misapprehended regarding the contemplation of the imposition of economic sactions against Burma due to a potential cataclysmic repercussion, that is... the oil giant's involvement in Burma.
Yes, but more importantly the international community should stay clear of China and India territory.
Yes, I agree with your speech Mr. HS for the Myanmar, but I strongly disappointed of your action to our Khmers monks in Cambodia.
So, clean your own a--hole first before you try to do one of yours' friend.
Are prepared to pay $8 per liter.
I don't think we're prepared to pay $8 per liter in the not-too-distant future followed the impostion of Western economic sanctions against oil-rich country.
Even Thailand kisses Burma's ass to keep the oil flowing into the country.
Where is the best sniper ,this is a very good spot to send Mr. prime minister former khmer rouge go to vietnam
$8/ltr? LOL, I think I can get run on whiskey for half that amount.
Why doesn't the Cambodian Prime Minister (Hun Sen)unbutton his suit? The bottom one should always be opened. Only a hillbilly doesn't unbutton the bottom button.
Why do all his advisors are not aware of this?
His Excellency Gen. Kimyan:
Please make your people proud.
Your memory will last forever. And, many Cambodian generation will thank you.
Please make us proud!
The G-man and the CIA agents know very well that carrying an assination of the sitting prime minister is against the U.S. law.
In addition, Mr. Heang, who's in charged of Hun Sen's bodyguard unit, will be very upset if the assination occured. Furthermore, thousands of Hun Sen's men will be out of work.
