A Korean resources developer has won exclusive mining rights in northern Cambodia, an area that could contain large quantities of copper, zinc and iron ore, the government said on Thursday (Nov. 15).
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said the eight mining zones secured by Kenertec Co. cover 1,520 square kilometers -- twice the size of Seoul. It said preliminary surface surveys showed potentially large metallic deposits.
In 2002, China carried out a detailed survey of an area near Kenertec's new claims, and discovered about 600 million tons of iron ore underground.
The ministry said the company plans to conduct more detailed seismic studies starting next year to discern the size of the mineral deposits. Full-scale development of the region will take place after a complete survey is conducted.
"The area has been relatively unexplored in the past because it was a military-controlled zone and off-limits to civilians," said a government official. He said with the military taking steps to allow development, the region is attracting interest from Chinese and Vietnamese companies.

Excellent, we can never have enough explorers when we are trying to get out of poverty fast.
I will prayed that they will discovered trillions of dollars worth of valuable quickly.
We don't have to rush to digging up the earth. The demand for natural resources will always there, probably with even higher prices if we wait a little. But if we have to do it, it should only be done in way that it will not hurt our evironment, the livelihood of the people living nearby and in a sustainable way. Last but not least, we should make the best for the money with any deals. By rushing to it, we open ourselves for mistakes thus opens the government for criticism. I know Cambodia needs money to develop the country but I think we don't need all the money in short span and have nothing after that...

yes a Chinese company explored this place and a Vietnamese company is interested. Now a Korean company has the mining rights. Who will the money goto, instead of cheap metal for building and engineering and Cambodia, these foreigners want it for themselves. Who will reap the most benefit, money is just paper remember that.
