HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 27, 2007 -- High Point University associate professor and director of the M.A. in Nonprofit Management program, David F. Walker, presented a paper at the national conference of the Association for Research on Nonprofit and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) which was held Nov. 14 - 17 in Atlanta.
The paper was titled "International Funding for Human Rights Organizations in Cambodia: A Case Study of the Diakonia and Forum Syd Foundations." It examined two Swedish-based foundations that provide funding for 14 human rights organizations in Cambodia.
"One of the more significant findings was that most non-governmental (nonprofit), human rights organizations in Cambodia are heavily dependent on funding from foreign governments and international foundations," explained Walker. "Those NGOs have not been able to achieve nor sustain financial independence from outside funders. They are also in need of standards and codes of conduct. Accountability and transparency are lacking in many of the human rights organizations that operate in Cambodia."
Each year the ARNOVA conference brings together researchers, scholars, and practitioners from around the world to present and discuss papers related to issues in nonprofit studies, voluntary action, and philanthropy. The cutting-edge research presented at the conference helps build the body of knowledge about the sector and inform those working in the nonprofit sector.
Walker has been with HPU since 2003. He received his bachelor's degree in administration of criminal justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago, his master's in public administration from Northern Illinois University, and is in the process of completing his doctorate in public policy.
At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in a fun environment with caring people.
