An official from the royal palace declared that there could be an attempt made by a group of republicans to oppose and topple the monarchy system in Cambodia.

Oum Daravuth, an official from the royal palace office (and a nephew of Queen-Mother), discussed about the attempt made for this toppling, following the authority’s confiscation of the Free Press Magazine (FPM) which included articles and drawings very critical to the former monarch, King Norodom Sihanouk.

Oum Daravuth praised the measures taken to counter the scorning made against the former monarch. Oum Daravuth declared: “Based on what I understand, H.E. Khieu Kanharith did the right thing because no magazines or newspapers can violate Article 7, Chapter 2 of the constitution which stipulates that the king shall be inviolable. The Ministry of Information has the duty of confiscating or closing down this newspaper, this does not mean that we don’t respect the press freedom rights, this is stipulated in the Constitution, and the Constitution is the supreme law of the land. Based on what I observed, a lot of republicans came, for example, to set up the Republican party in a kingdom, and no kingdom would ever allow a republican party to exist, this means that in Cambodia, we respect a lot the freedom rights of each party …”.

Oum Daravuth added: “… I am very puzzled and want to know why the Republican party is set up, and why a republican newspaper is formed to attack our king or our Hero-King? As H.E. Khieu Kanharith rightly said so, these (republican) group, they are only waiting to attack the monarchy only, and in particular, to attack the monarchy institution itself., because first of all, these (republican) people are very hurt that the Lon Nol republic regime lasted only 5-year, therefore, the remnant (of this regime) want to avenge their fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, who couldn’t govern Cambodia during the Lon Nol regime for a long period of time.”

The FPM which was prevented by the authority from being distributed is a newly published magazine which issued its first edition in November 2007.

Who would have known that K Kanharth is also a "lakhon sbek" operator? He knows how to jerk the carved leather figurines of the royals to the tune of CPP music. No, f$^%k trad, not all 1.7 or some thing million victims of Khmer Rouge were Lon Nolians. Did not CPP memebrs say they had to get their asses to Vietnam away from the Khmer Rouge? Would not that make them Lon Nolians also?

Many of the victims families and relatives just want to know who among the royalists and the former-KR-but-now-suits-wearing communist monkeys were guilty in the most recent biggest crimes against humanity.

Now, go on, jerk and spin your lakhon sbek again. Tell your royal and communist tales.

Oum Daravuth is a wolf in dog clothes especially when lives off palace scraps all his life.

Monarchy regime has been good for years for Khmers but only kings who came from Siam puppets or Yuon bastards are the rotten leeches for Cambodia.

Republicanism is also good to many nations included Yuon the present King and families paternal line.

Make it short,Sihanouk forced Republic on Khmers to his Cambodyuon people and nation.

Imbecile Oum Daravuth and the smae as Kanharith (used to be a Republic element too in PRK-SOC)needs to rest now and leave those Republic folks alone. You are lucky that they did not file suit on your rotten bone Uncle the Viet Cong Father who killed millions and sold country for fake 500riel bills.
Oum Daravuth can lay it off now and try to have a real job like every real man out there. This is for a real dog is one thing but this guy is only athe dog family flea.

Simply branding people as "republicans" is not admissible evidence to prove that those people are republicans. Historical evidence has shown that royalists had started to abolish the monarchy in 1960 when King Suramarith died. We no longer had any king or queen until 24 Septembver 1993. Surprise?

For the record for posterity, when our King Suramarith died there was no election of a new king or queen to assume the function of head of state. Queen Kossamak, King Suramarith's wife and mother of our August, Great and Valorous King Sihanouk, was Queen only in name. She was not Head of State. She was made queen to symbolise the "throne" -preah reach palang- (or monarchy).

The likely candidate was our present August, Great and Valourous King Sihanouk, but had already vowed not to be ever king again when he abdicated in 1955 in favour of his father, King Suramarith. I heard him repeating that vow from time to time in public speeches broadcasted on radio in the 19650s and 1960s when I was a peasant boy attending a high school and later at a university. (I'm now an old man-63) He said the crown (makot) was too heavy and with a crown on his head he could not directly serve his people. He was right, wasn't he? And he was powerful (or a strong man), as "Father of the Nation" and head of Sangkum Reatr Nyum.

What to do then to break the "deadlock" (we faced a very similar one after the 2003 election)? In 1960 we simply amended our counstitution, as we enacted an additional constitutional law in 2004, to create the post of head of state and appointed our present August, Great and Valorous King as Head of State in 1960. He was not a constitutional, cemonial, figurehead monarch because he was not crowned king. He became effectively a president, but not a ceremonial, figurehead president, but a president with executive power. Cambodia became a republic with an executive president but name. In his own writings our August, Great and Valorous King, has also alluded ro the presidential nature of his regime from the time he had been made Head of State.

When UNTAC came to run our country and organise the election of a new government in 1992-1993, there was an attempt to get that UN body to also organise a presidential election aimed at getting our August, Great and Valorous King elected President of Cambdia. Apparently, he was willing to stand for that presidential election, and he would indeed have been elected when he was so popular that he was confined to the royal palace almost all the time after his return from Beijing 1n November 1992.

I, for one, objected to that rumoured presidential election and wrote an article for Phnom Penh Post to voice this objection. (I'm sending this article to Ki-media.blogspot.com to kindly reproduce in its column). I talked to Samdech Son Sann, whom I served and from whom I have learned a lot, and also a few Son Sannist colleagues, I wanted to stand in that presidential election as well with only two-point political platform: (1) I wanted to Cambodia to be a Kingdom; (2) If I was elected president, I would invite our present August, Great and Valorous King, to assume the thone, and after that I'd resign to be become just an ordinary "citizen Lao" (as a royalist called me from time to time-he waslater made ambassador and since then has not returned to Cambodia). Samdech Son Sann and those colleagues were dismayed.

Back to the confication of the Free Press Magazine, the reason for it is not so much the "republican" issue as the issue of the murder of our famous actress Piseth Pilika. Some years ago, probably in 2003, a small book of the murder with the photo of our beautiful actress on its cover was published and sold in Phnom Penh. The copies of that small book were all confisticated.

An authoritiative French magazine, L'Express, published a story of her murder, citing our Prime Minister's affair with her and implicating his wife in the matter. Our Prime Minister's people vowed to sue L'Express magazine for defamation, but hey have never done so ever since.

The whole thing probably boils down to our memories (or ghosts)of our parents, relatives, teachers, friends and other fellow Cambodians who died at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, and the memory (or ghost)of our famous actress Piseth Pilika, haunting respecively those who had associated with the Khmer Rouge and those who were behind the murder of Piseth Pilika or who might know who might be her assassin yet have not acted to find justice for her.

Mr. 3:58 PM

Thanks.

It's good to be informed of another dimension of the issue we look at. Some people might be very to see squables among royalists. personally, royalists do not have any (more) idea and strategy to the country. They look more over their shoulders instead of looking a head.

In politics there is a bicycle theory. When you don't move ahead, you simply fall.

Lok Lao Mong Hai,
I could say you have stood for a candidacy for President if it was not for Son Sann to change color on you at last minutes.Son Sann handed you poison laced with honey then. All still remember and remember it well. Son Sann was no exception his hands were dirty and bloody too during KPNLF schematics in misleading folks to get kill by Sihanoukists the 70's then in 1993 as well.Son Sann was a Yuon element from young age up then died as the nation Yuon agent in old age.

Now back to Republic, for Sihanoukis in his nature he has no qualm in moral value or ethical stance as long as he was made head or on top even his own aunt.

He broke his oath that's why he is so afraid Republic esprit will get him before his death.Hun Sen pulled his balls once or twice during the pretentious Supreme Border Council convenings which he used to lure in all oppositions into one room. Then he did what he usually does to get what he's really after, the throne for his son.No shame as a father,Sihanouk quarreled with own elder son Ranridh, another royal imbecile,to stay put and let Hun Sen screw him over once, twice thrice and finally.
No offense, since you are still fond of the criminal Sihanouk who humiliated you and labeled you the famous Doctor...So the curse is Sihanouk died his throne and all of family will make exodus like some of us who ended up in abroad under his big paint brush as Republic dreamers. This is the spark that Sihanouk had set the house on fire with before 69 and 70.

Thank you in your defense of those who rather live free at own creator will,as Sihanouk and Sihanoukists labeled Khmer Republic.
Personally,no matter in material whether wood or ach chha'haer as long as people named it preah pakdemakor then it is preah to the rest,so the same with the regim.

After all the Republic is no free of critical erros since all are under human imagination but many nations choose Republic over defunct monarchy like Afghanistan or Bao Dai (Sihanouk own distant forefather lineage) as long people are up to it.

Cambodia will never be free as long as the despotic regime at the accomplice of the monarchy stay in power.

Cambodia needs a real regime that reflect its modern mind and needs.

The way I see it, Dr. Lao, it is not so much as Republican vs Monarchy, but an ongoing Monarchy (Norodom) vs. Mornarchy (Sisowat). There are still a bunch of Sisowats oversea who's not willing to put the past behind for the sake of the country. They have to take revenge for their uncle Sarimatak by putting down the Norodom, not to mention that they are also struggling for their share of power which you once stated recently that there is no power to be shared. I am telling you. The royalists' disputes is really getting on my nerve. It is like having a time bomb somewhere in your house, if you know what I mean.

Thank you for your opinion, regarding morality or ethics that we cambodians should adopt for the right path to democracy.

We all have been branded as republican or monarchist...even KR for quite sometime, and this repititive lebelling still continue, and the damage is the only outcome that poor cambodians continue to receive.

Let's face the fact that we are now claimed to be monarchy with the king as our arbitrator.Perhaps we all learnt enough from vicious cycle of our past.If claimed to be copatriot, please resume ourselve to roles and responsibilities for practicle and responsible civil servants.

As kingdom, our king has to fullfil his roles, and officials are civil servants not the oppressors, and ethical value continue to educate our people where buddhism is also have a role in society.Until we all are decisive enough to face challenge, otherwise the blaming games will continue as well as khmer suffering as result of these conflict of interest.

I was a young man from Tuol Ta Ek, Battambang, from Eap Khut college and also wish to talk futher to Areak Prey if you are still there.

Dr. Lao,

Your great reflection is real. Do you believe like me?

Of course, this magazine is not condemning the king or monarchy in Cambodia, but to tell the king and monarchy that you are being used by CPP politicians to gain the power.

King should express gratitude to the magazine.

And through their lackey in palace who is working as politician's secrete agent there came to claim that Republicans are trying to overthrow Cambodian monarchy.

This is dangerous for monarchy in Cambodia that is being disrespectfully used by CPP politicians.

6:50, the CPP has already got power. How much more power could it get by using the king and the monarch?

Lok Neang SA,
How 's the weather here? You re welcomed!

In view Lok Lao Mong Hai struggles with his real conviction whether to be or not to be; a republic idealist?

You are right,it is not the vehicle that is bad but the driver.Sihanouk drove Cambodia since 1941 but we see where he got it in now.
But when the driver abandoned his/her car and job,the patrol officer needed to tow the car away.Like it or not Lon Nol had no better choice but a Republic to get some donations. Sihanouk was communist head of state in monarchy system. Sihanouk became a supper eater Buddhist monk while others were restrained from that.
Exactly that's how it happened to Cambodia in 1970 and then later date.

The only mistake was Republic was too kind not to exterminate all Sihanouk elements unlike Juillet 14 1789 Bastille day in Paris.

Now we know who's the real ingrate and criminal?
