Study raises concerns about Cambodia farm trade gap

Thursday, November 1, 2007

PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): A recent study by the Royal Academy of Cambodia has raised concerns about the trade imbalance in fruits and vegetable between Cambodia and its neighbors, the Cambodia Daily newspaper said Thursday.

According to the September report, there was a nearly 400-fold trade imbalance in fruits and vegetables passing through international gateways at Poipet on the Thai border and Trapang Plong on the Vietnamese border in 2004 and 2005, and the trend is continuing.

The study further contended that the trade deficit has led to a loss of Cambodian agricultural jobs, as well as low moral among Cambodia's farmers, most of whom are small-scale and cannot compete in such an environment.

Around 113 million U.S. dollars in fruits and vegetables were imported from Thailand in 2005, versus a mere 296,159 U.S. dollars exported from Cambodia to Thailand, the study concluded.

In Banteay Meanchey province alone, 772 small and mid-size Cambodian firms are currently importing agricultural goods into Cambodia, the report said.

Well, if the farmers can't compete, then they need to step down and let someone else try, and they can work for them instead.

I had been saying way before this stupid article published that the Thaicong and the Vietcong are waging a one way economic war against dirt poor Cambodian farmers! Nobody listen for a long time!

The Thaicong and the Vietcong are depended heavily on exported economy to create job for their population! I wouldn't be surprise if these Thaicong and the Vietcong farmers get some form of subsidy from their government and at the same time they shut out Cambodian products to their market!

It is time to tell the Thaicong and the Vietcong government to play fair by telling them to open their fucken market to Cambodian products too! Otherwise Cambodia needs to impose tariff on all their fucken products!

It is so ridiculous to know that Thailane currency have more value than Cambodian riel and yet dirt poor Cambodian people can afford to buy product from Thailane! Ahahahah
(1 Thai Baht= 129.861Cambodian Riel)

It took these so called Vietcong trained economist for a long time to figure out why Cambodia has such a high unemployment rate and why dirt poor Cambodian farmers continue to suffer even though their land is so fertile which can grow almost anything!

For all the fucken treaties signed in the field of economic between the Thaicong and the Vietcong, the Vietcong trained Cambodian economists need to go back and study the fine print again and again because the devil that curse Cambodia economic system is in the fine print!

Now go do the right thing!

I don't blame Thailand or Vietnam... I think that this happens because lots of land belong to the senior government offcials and rich oknha...they leave the land vacant, fenced and put up signs for sale...75% of land belong to only 5% of people (senior govt and oknha). Does anyone know Phanpimex Group of Companies...they have a lot of land and this company links to Hun Sen family..lots of land grabbing done by this company...

OK! Let me play with your logic! If the senior government and oknha owned 75% of the land and dirt poor Cambodian farmers don't have land to grow their produce for the market to have income and how do you explain where these dirt poor Cambodian farmers get their money from to buy the Thiacong and the Vietcong product worth in hundred and million of dollars every year?

So are you saying that dirt poor Cambodian farmers can grow money on tree? Now you don't expect me to believe that 5% of Cambodian population made of mostly senior government officials and oknha can afford to spend hundred of million of dollar every year on Thaicong and Vietcong products?

The real issue here how did so many Thaicong and Vietcong were able to flood Cambodian market to kill off Cambodian business activities! It must be black-markets at work too because the fucken corruption is still a major issue in Cambodia!

Hey, cut the guessing game, 1:32! Fact of the matter is our rural area needs a lot of works yet. There is no way to compete with our neighbors right now, especially the Thai, but we will. We must pull together to develop our rural area as best as we can, and not wait for the government to get to everyone. This might take another 6-8 years.

I ain't guess anything here! It is a fact! If stupid Cambodian leaders know that Cambodia can't compete with the Thaicong and the Vietcong and why do they allowed the Thaicong and the Vietcong products to flood Cambodian market to kill off Cambodian business! Why can these stupid Cambodian leaders put some form of restriction on the Thaicong and the Vietcong product dumping? Why! Why can Cambodia wait until they can compete and then allow a certain amount of products from Thailane and Vietname to come in to promote competition in the market place!

Do you understand how the free market works? The free market can only work when there is a fair competition and not a cutthroat competition or illegal product dumping! Do you think that dirt poor Cambodian people can wait 6-8 years without a job?

Please don’t get in the ring if you are not a boxer! You have to be trained and well prepare before you can get in the ring otherwise you will be slaughter! This is what is happening to Cambodian economy and it is being slaughter by the Thaicong and the Vietcong!

The government must facilitate these farmers. This is the job of government to keep the industry alive.

Agreed, but government can't do everything alone. People must help out and must used their land efficiently if we are to have any chance of competition.

2:59, we needed to import those goods from Thailand and Vietnam in order to keep the inflation under control, despite we are not ready for competition. You don't need a PhD to know about price vs supply/demand.

To 1:30AM!

That is a bullshit economic talk! This is an economic war and stupid Cambodian government can't afford to overlook all these Thaicong and Vietcong importation that is killing Cambodian businesses!

To keep the inflation down so that Cambodian people will be out of job which will destroy the tax base and the whole economic base?

It is illegal for any country to practice product dumping on other country!

There are many ways to control inflation! One of the ways is to control money supply and raise interest rate, taxe, or wage...

How's Khmer out of job from local Competition. There are lot of markets, for instance, China and North Korea can never have enough foods. The real problem is we are not even close to full productivity yet.

What? You called the action of product dumping by the Thaicong and the Vietcong as local competition? Ahahhahahha!

When Cambodia is dealing with country to country and it is called international! But when Cambodia is dealing within Cambodia and it is called local!

How could you use China and North Korea for comparison? Ahahhahhah
China is a superpower and China exports all kind of product all over the world! North Korea is still under economic embargo and isolated from the rest of the world!

Hey! It had been 28 years since your dictator came to power and please don't tell me that things are not fully up running because the world don't give a fuck!

Well then, where do you think we should be at, 11:34, neck to neck, with the US, nose to nose with Japan, ... or head to head with Laos?
