The Value of Wearing Eyeglass!

They both wear eyeglasses, which one should I vote for?

By Pang Sokhoeun

Actually, the story happened almost five years ago in Angkor Borei district, Takeo province during my visit to my brother-in-law. I was very happy every vocation during my study abroad because I could visit my family and our country. And the memory of the visit is written down in my dairy, but it never publicized. Yet this one is very funny it does reflect the way some people judge thing in our motherland.

Psychologically, in Cambodia to wear glasses is to give another value to the person himself. People are viewed and valued differently sometimes by the glasses they wear, particularly, the sunglasses and the eyeglasses. To wear the sunglasses, one is viewed as socialized, civilized, sexy, and yet sometime he is viewed as the blind or even a gangster. The eyeglass has somehow different value. It is viewed as the symbol of the educated, intellectual, gentleness, and politeness.

Taking the opportunity of my visit to my brother in-law, I also traveled around to see the daily life of the people in the district and to share my political idea with the local people. I hired a boat from Angkor Borie dock and traveled to Bakdai Khmer-Youn border accompanied by a police and my friends. It cost 32000 Riel for a round trip. We had some stops to talk with the people along our way in Praekda and Bakdai villages in Koktlok Commune. Their living standard is visibly hard and poor. The rich family has a zincs house with the size of 5m x 6m and the 90% of the houses are 3×4m size cottage covered with palm tree or thatched roof. Remarkably, we had a nice conversation with a family. We talked things ranging from daily life to politics. Now let’s go straight to the point of the topic.

Ps: How many parties participated in the commune election?

Woman: Two parties- The CPP and the Funcinpec

PS: Do you know who are the leaders of those parties?

Woman: Yes, Samdech Hun Sen and Prince Norodom Ranarith the son of Samdech Auv.

PS: Which party did you vote for?

She was quiet and smiled, and then she spoke in a low voice, “It is secret.”

But you can know later who she voted for. Then I continued: Do you know Sam Rainsy Party (SRP)?

Woman: I heard it.

PS: Do you know who the leader of SRP is?

Woman: No.

Then, I told her the name of SRP’s leader. And we explained her about SRP’s political platform. She listened to us with interest. Then I continued the question. Have you seen Hun Sen and Prince Norodom Ranarith?

Woman: Yes, I see them on TV. I watched TV at that house. She pointed to the house about 100m away.

PS: So you never see Sam Rainsy, right?

Woman: No, I never see him.

During that time, SRP was not as strong and widely well-known as it is today not only in the commune but even in the district level regarding to Angkor Borei.

PS: Do you want to see his picture?

Woman: Yes

Then I took a picture of Mr. Sam Rainsy from the SRP’s leaflet that one of my friends had it with him to show her. Surprisingly, she shouted, “Oh! He wears eyeglasses just like Sam Dech Hun Sen.” Then she continued, “According to your explanation and his picture; I think he is really good, too. So which one should I vote for because they both wear eyeglasses?” We all laughed and paused for a while!

Psychologically, I immediately understood her decision making value. So I continued to convince her by telling her a story that happened before that when I took a motor taxi in Phnom Penh from my house, Bueng Kengkang II, to riverside. At that time, I had a very good conversation with the motor taxi driver as well. We talked mostly about politics and we found out that we had some memories in common, i.e., we participated in the 1998 demonstration and we witnessed the brutality of the Hun Sen police. But it was even more interesting when he answered one of my questions that if Sam Rainsy and Hun Sen had something in common. He told me that they did have the commonness such as they both are brave, stubborn and to my surprise is that he added that they both wear eyeglasses. I put doubt about this why he thought that it is characteristically important for these leaders. Then I asked him with wonder why they wore glasses. He personally and distinguishingly answered that Sam Rainsy wears eyeglasses because he is a intellectual. He is well-educated and gentle. As for Hun Sen he wears eyeglasses because he is blind.

So this is the story! What do you think?

Come on...they both are the same. Hun Sen is blinded by the war. Sam Rainsy is blinded by his power in SRP.

99% of blind people are stubborn. It is natural.

I none of them can win the 2008 election: Ok.

But If one of them will win, I prefer the right one who will surely work for cambodian.

If Sam Rainsy wanted power he shouldn't go through all the troubles that he went through, almost lost his life, he should have just kowtow to Rannariddh and Hun Sen and take the treasurer position as long as he wanted while he was the finance minister.

would you do like him....i bet you probably corrupt as hell

How about both men have difficulty in eye sight so they both need glasses?

Anonymous said...

Hun Sen wears glass for the facade. He is no real intellectual.

Reading this article remind me when I was in Cambodia years ago. I asked one man who lives near my parent's house about his vote. He said he would vote for one blind rather than two blind. I didn't understand him at that time.

Now, I know that Khmer population are just idiots! Is that why they fought all of the time? It is also the truth that Khmers are 95% peasants: poor, uneducated, and easily manipulated because of such believe.

One can coined something out of the thin air - they will believe. I think in 20 years; Khmers folks will have no land to live. The Khmers will become like the Champa & the Khmer Krom folks.

If you all observe poorest country like Cambodia lots of their leaders wear glasses compared to US or other powerful nation their leaders don't wear glasses! How come their countries are on the top? I'm just ACHEY! and just wondering!

ONE SOURCE I KNOW , THE OPTICIAN WHO WORK ON HUN SEN GLASSES' SAID HIS LENSE IS JUST A REGULAR GLASS(NO PRESCRIPTION AT ALL!) HUN SEN FAKED IT! JUST FOR THE SERIOUS LOOK! HE PRETENDED TO BE EDUCATED!

Eyeglasses dosn't tell you any thing beside people who wear that eyeglasses because they have poor eyesights. But to judge people based on what they wear or use is unreasonable and unacceptable. We should judge people based on their background, experience, education, skill, actions, morality, ethics, compassion, and their accomplishment. Based on these criteria, you can make a good judegement for these two politicians.

Most blind people have some kind of talent with hands, legs or mouth. Hun Sen has talent in killing. I don't know about Rainsy (?).

Hey, 6:09 AM
They don't wear glasses because they are not educated like Hun Sen and Rainsy. These two guy are top of the wolrd.

Anonymous said...

during the KR period the people with VENTA will go/execute first. So how about that.

Anonymous said...

Blind people are brave and stubborn because they see no fear or death.

Hey! Hune Sen blind only one eye and he is not intertaul. He should just only wear one eye-patch like a pirat. I think it would suit him really well.

What do you think?

Anonymous said...

The one-eye-see man is half intelligence and the other half is the eye of evil.

Anonymous said...

The guy on the right look like a queer.

Anonymous said...

The guy with one eye is the king of the country where the rest of the people are blind both eyes, including Sihamoni.
Hun Kwang does what he wants.
Too bad!

Anonymous said...

Well, real Khmer (PM Hun Sen) will be the best leader of all times.

Anonymous said...

We should shoot the other one eye of this Kwak guy to blind both eyes. May be take one of his balls and leave one penis along with it to make it pair. This Hun Kwak deserves blind eyes and no penis. This Kwak fucks too many Viet girls that he blinded and signed land to Hanoi.

Vote him down for 2008 or PEOPLE REVOLUTION.

If Sam RainSy is blind the one who says is blind and deaf or pretends to be blind and see or hear nothing.
If you say Sam Rainsy is stubborn, dare you become a man like him by investing life to fight with the armed real-blind man with speaking and concience for the freedom of peaple and justice and develpment. If you want to know that he is blind or what, live longer and see if your country with one-eye man leads your country and especially your children to become a more miserable begger and protstitutes for those who are in power.
Why don't you judge him with his action especially when he was the minister of the finance and economics? Did you know that 1 dollar was just 2700 riels from 4000 riels. Don't you belive that education help people. if you don't, don't send your children to school. Let compare between Hun Sen and Sam RainSy. Who learned moere and have more experience about the world?. Sam RainSy can speak English, French and travels around the world and speak to the world by himself, what about Hun Sen?. Can he speak English, French? but he can speak Vietnamese. what do you think? when one can not understand Enlish or French, can he or she read or listen to the world news or other new knowledge these days that are in English.
That is the reason why Cambodia is still a begger country and you know that how much we owe China, world band and other, probably 10000 million dollars now.
You wants to be poor longer but I don't

Wrong, Ah Sam Rainsy is indeed blind and hallucinating. The country is not lacking any freedom, and none is suffering from it. What we are suffering from is lack of jobs, jobs, jobs, and the guys is totally ignorant of that. Many times he called for economic sanction against Cambodia to make people suffered so they will vote for him. He's nothing but a greedy desperate terrorist, and we don't want him in srok Khmer to step on people back to gain power. He's not living in the real world. He think Cambodia is Canada, hahaha, LOL, hahaha. The guys don't even know what country he's in, and you say he's educated, hahaha, LOL, hahaha.... ROFLMAO.

I rather have lost my sight -- not vision. And our prime minister has both.

Our prime minister inarguably has more than a vision, and his extensive experience proves it.

Remember!!!

Because of Wearing Eyeglass, many innocents have been slaughtered by the khmer rouge, during the period 1975-79.

Do not forget what it means to them(KR) just putting on a pair of glasses.

Nice story:

I have learned two things from this story,

1. Cambodian people in general votes only for personality and those who are in public media through TV. They are regardless of personal education or party's democratic system.

But SRP's new style of media is effective through mouth to mouth, and the spreading news through person in the grassroots. This is great SRP strategy, but to bargain for opposition in TV like in other democratic countries is crucial and ongoing for SRP

2. All Cambodian people realized that Hun Sen's wearing glasses because of his blind eye, so the value for wearing eyeglasses in Khmer society is good for Sam Rainsy.

People will be going to the poll and vote for the one who has the most experience, and who can lead the country out of poverty. That is, undoubtedly the CPP Party.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, 3:10Pm, you are right. I think now CPP does have experiences, meaning the xperiences to expliot the nation, to be the slave of vietnam, and to capitalize its cronies.

For SRP is the only hope that we must consider. It is not about wearing glasses but it is about the leader himself. Rainsy has no doubt value caompre with hun sen who is just a puppet and dictator.

Anonymous said...

Your opinion matters! Let the people decide!

The experience speaks itself.

The CPP Party is insurmountable and impregnable. Invective media will not defeat the current government. In fact, only the current government can successfully lead the country to propitious economy.

Anonymous said...

One man got real vision and the other man is totally blind ...

Anonymous said...

Good story!!!

The one is truly blind in both eyes and vision. The other has all.

Let's vote for SRP!!! Chayo Sam Rainsy!

Anonymous said...

Sure, sure, when he's back in Canada. Srok Khmer is only for Khmer Leaders, but Canadian.

Anonymous said...

Our party (CPP) is quite simple; plus, you will be hardpress to find anything simpler than this: that is, we simply let the people decide! We don't believe in sticking guns in someone's heads and make them choose. Again, we let them decide. After all, this is a democratic country, whereby people have the right to elect the person who they think is best for the country. The answer is obviously clear: CPP Party.

After it is said and done, the outcome will speak for itself.

Anonymous said...

You are right 11:59PM that CPP dnt belive in sticing guns in someone's head to win, instead CPP will shooting anyone who doesnt choose it to victory.

And the result is clearly fraud, vote buying, cheating, threatening, and killing by using guns, money, and NEC.

Anonymous said...

Oh, give us (Khmers) a break, 4:18. We are not as good in cheating as westerners do, and you know it. So stop playing dumb and embarrassed yourself in front of the audiences here, alright?

Anonymous said...

You idoit embarrassed yourself. Ah slave to AH KANTOP HUN SEN.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and just how did we embarrassing ourselves, huh?

Anonymous said...

For crying out loud! This is not the Wild, Wild West. This is Cambodia! Everyone has the right to vote for their favorite candidates.
