Arrest of Woman in Land Dispute Sparks Worries

The arrest of a woman in Battambang province following her arrest by authorities in a land dispute has sent other villagers into jungle hiding, a rights official said Friday.

Chan Hoeur, who is in her 40s and a resident of Koy Veng village, was arrested Thursday following a confrontation with police over land and a private company, said Yin Meng Ly, a Battambang rights investigator for Adhoc.

The villagers saw their land stolen this year after occupying it since the fall of the Khmer Rouge, Yin Meng Ly said, adding that the land legally belonged to the villagers under Cambodia's land law.

Some villagers have gone into the jungle to hide, fearing they will be arrested too, he said.

"It's a bit unjust because the company plowed over the villagers' land. Hectares of mango and banana trees were damaged, and no one is talking about this," said Sun Seouy, of the Village Development Council. "The villagers seem to be more vulnerable; we're all human beings."

It is sad to hear all of this. However, each village has a commune leader and parliament represent them. Where are they? They got the vote from them. Why don’t they help finding the truth off the activities? It is not a CPP or RNP or SRP.
On the other hand they hide in Phnom Penh and restaurant and food. Those poor villagers are now having no place to stay.

I am very proud of all our officials for guarding our lands from Ah Khmer-Yuon illegal immigrants.

We needed our land to develop so that we can get out of poverty. We can't afford to give it away to any illegal immigrant.

after the khmer regime, every family has a small piece of land to cultivate. I don't know why the gov take their land away just like that.

Every day you read the article; you see land grabbing all over Cambodia. This means Hun Sen approves to confiscate the land from the poor, but he can't grab Hanoi's land. Because he is afraid he might be dam ter ong.

Enough is enough for CPP. All the Khmer poor people need to revolt against Hun Sen regime. Don't let them push you around and don't hide from them. Call the UN and other foreign embassies to let them know what is going on in your village.

Hey, let's be reasonable about this and don't be so greedy here, 3:57. You got land in Vietnam already. We (Khmers) barely have enough land for ourselves, and we don't have extra for anyone else, can you see? Therefore, have some consideration here, will ya, you land-snatcher?
