BANGKOK - HOSTS Thailand will foot the bill for three cash-strapped countries to send teams to this week's South-east Asian (SEA) Games, an official said on Monday.
Games organisers agreed to cover the expenses of Laos, Cambodia and Timor Leste, which are among the world's poorest countries, after their hard-up Olympic committees asked for help.
'Thailand wants unity at the SEA Games and since we have 11 member countries, we want all of them to be here,' Charoen Wattanasin, secretary of the organising committee, told reporters.
'It's important that everyone gets a chance to compete.'
Timor Leste, whose Olympic committee is beset by administrative and financial problems, will send only seven athletes to Nakhon Ratchasima, with Games organisers picking up the tab.
The teams from Laos and Cambodia will travel for hours along their notoriously potholed roads before being picked up at their borders by a fleet of Thai buses.
Mr Charoen said accommodation and transport for the three countries' athletes will also be provided.
The fiercely-contested SEA Games, which takes place every two years, officially open on Thursday, although the soccer and shooting events are already underway.
Some 5,000 athletes from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, East Timor, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar and the Philippines, will compete in 43 sports, with 475 gold medals up for grabs.

I am glad that our Khmer people still do have a patriotic person like Pang Sokheou. I am really impressed after reading what he wrote regarding to the border issue.
Moreover, as mentioned in the article that is post in this KI: "Cambodia is a democratic-monarchy government.", it is true that Cambodia is a demoratic-monarchy government, but it must do as whatever the boss of CPP's leaders tell the government to do.
Cambodian can do whatever they want to do, but dont touch the Vietnam's interest which is to stop Vietnam encroaching on Cambodia's lands or try to stop Vietnam sending illegal immigrant to vote for CPP. If whoever try to touch those issues, they will be imprisoned or assassinated.
CPP leaders, Hun Sen and his gansters, are just political actors serving for the YOUN's benefits. I feel sorry for their lifes because they dont even have their
It is really shameful to have hun sen as a leader, to the west he keeps us as beggar and to the east he keeps us as servants.
Wwe must take thi man out of Cambodia.
Yeah, but this is nothing in comparison to Ah Khmer-Yuons slaving in Vietnam forever under Thach Ngoc Thach's stupid leadership.
Aside from that, Thank you brother (Thai), and may God blesses your great nation as always!
Cambodian athletics has been a loser for a long time and even HUN SEN doesn’t give a fuck about them! What is the fucken point to pay a loser to play? Does the Thaicong pay these Cambodian losers to embarrass themselves in front of international community?
As far as I am concerned Cambodian government shouldn't pay any fucken loser to represent Cambodia anywhere in the world!
So much for the Thaicong generosity!
On the contrary, under PM Hun Sen leadership our athletes had improved drastically over previous administrations.
Just look at the recent valley ball, we came in third. And in Kick Boxing, we are also in the top few. We never came this close historically.
What do you mean over previous administration? The previous administration was the Khmer Rouge administration!
You are just a fucken loser and for you to make an excuse as came close to third or top few is not an option!
No more excuse! Cambodia needs winner!
Previous administration mean everything before the CPP.
Khmer Rouge was the worse.
Sarimatak had nothing.
Somdach Euv had nothing.

Got the idea, now?
Who are you kidding? Ahahahh!
It seems that you have selective memory here! What about the administration after the Vietcong invasion in 1979 and isn't that AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave puppet government? For 10 long years, AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave puppet government rule over Cambodia under the Vietcong master and what have Cambodian people benefit anything from AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave puppet government? Of course not!
Oh well! Since the 1993 election organized by the UNTAC, AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave puppet government has given a lot things for Cambodia to be proud of such as 1997 coupe to take back his power, the grenades attack against the opposition, the families tree of thieves, the corruption which cost Cambodia more $500 million dollars a year, land grabbing,...etc
Under AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave government, Cambodia doesn't have to do anything to gain nothing and now that is something that AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave puppet government and you want to talk about! Ahhahahhah!
That is the stupidest argument I heard so far, 1:30.
No one can change anything in a flash without money raining down from the sky. It will take some times for the momentum of the previous administration to wear out before you can see some benefits.
