Cambodian sudents: Graduating to joblessness and despair

Cambodian students facing joblessness

“My name is Kuy Koeun, I am very disappointed because we were expecting that, after completing our degree at the university, like me for example, I studied in the administration of human resources, when I went to look for work in my field of study, I couldn’t find any. The majority of jobs require 2-3 years of experience. I looked for a job for almost one year already, since 2006.”

The deception and hopelessness after completing a university degree does not happen to just Kuy Koeun alone, there are several other university students, even those who completed a master degree one year ago, who claim that they couldn’t find a job yet.

Kim Ty expressed his deception, saying that since he completed his degree in 2005 in law, he looked for a job everywhere, and now he already completed his master degree in administration since the beginning of 2007, and he still couldn’t find a job yet.

Kim Ty explained the reason why it is so difficult to find a job: “The problem stems (partly) from the students themselves. This means that their education is not what the job market needs, for example, in the use of English, sometimes these students took classes also, but they never attend the class, when they complete their degrees, they cannot work. Right now, (the job market) demands knowledge, and even expertise. The second issue is a society problem, this can be considered as an economic problem also: the investments in our country are not functioning properly to be able to absorb the work force fresh out of universities.”

Suon, another student, claimed that he completed his degree in information technology two years ago, and he still couldn’t find a job yet. This made him lose hope and confidence in the education and the government.

Suon talked about his concerns on his future, saying that he should be able to find a job in his specialty field, and earn at least $300 per month. But, instead, Suon said: “Right now, I don’t have a job.”

Along with the hopelessness of their children, the students’ parents are also disappointed because their children completed universities already, but yet, they still have to feed them.

Seng, a villager from Leuk Dek village, Kandal province, told RFA with a sad face that he worked hard in the field to save money for his son to attend school, and sometimes, he wouldn’t even dare spending the money on himself so that he could send it to his son studying in Phnom Penh, because he expected that after completing his degree, his son would find a decent job. However, he is very deceived because his son, who completed university 2 years ago, sill cannot find a job yet.

Seng said: “It’s a difficult problem, because (I was expecting that) at the end (of his schooling), there wouldn’t be anything left to talk about anymore. In fact, my family struggled hard to have our son attend school, sometimes we didn’t even have enough money, so we saved to have him attend school. Normally, we struggled so our child can study, but I am extremely disappointed that after school, he couldn’t find a job at all…”

According to Roth Sokha, the director of the department of higher education, he said on 06 December that, each year, almost 20,000 students complete their university degrees, and among these, about 30% of them couldn’t find a job.

Roth Sokha said: “From what I see, the no. 1 problem is that when they apply for a job, their education is not compatible with what the job market needs, with that they fall once. Secondly, the number of job positions that can absorb them is too small, our (job) market is too little.”

Roth Sokha added that in Cambodia, there are 65 universities, 24 of which belong to the state, and at all universities, the Ministry of Education (MoEYS) directed them to abide by the standard of education so that graduated students have the ability to work to build the country in the future.

Mak Sarath, a coordinator for the Cambodian Youth Council (CYC), indicated that, currently, the number of jobless people amounts to between 300,000 and 350,000 each year. He said that most of the youths have no jobs because the degree of education was not high enough, and they don’t have experience, for example.

Mak Sarath said: “There is no job market, in fact, in Cambodia, our youths should aim their education towards finding a true job, not aiming at just obtaining any degree.”

Mao Veasna, President of the Students’ Movement for Democracy (SMD), indicated that out of 10 students graduating students, only 1 of them has a true job, and hundreds of students came to his group to ask to work for free.

Mao Veasna said: “This is an obstacle to the development of our country, because in a democratic country, people wouldn’t let their youths, the core of the nation, to remain jobless like this.”

In response to the issues above, Oum Mean, the under-secretary of state of the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training (MoLVT), said that in order to reduce joblessness, the government is looking for a partnership with other countries that need labor force, such as Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong etc… The MoLVT had also organized a number of job training programs for jobless people.

Oum Mean said: “We provide training for people who have no expertise, these are ordinary expertise, such as hairstylist, engine repair, AC repair etc… so that they can find a job. Furthermore, for students who do not have the ability to go to a university for higher education, we provide training for them in centers, vocational training and professional schools. We provide three types of training levels: the general one, the upper one, and the medium one. Those who have the ability can pursue their training all the way to the upper level.”

He added that, in fact, in 2007, the government sent out more than 70,000 people to work overseas, among those there were people who have some expertise and those who don’t. The government hopes that by 2018-2020, people will all have jobs (in Cambodia).

Economist Chan Sophal, an economic researcher, said that joblessness is a step towards social problems, and Cambodia must effectively resolve this issue.

Now that the 2008 is approaching rapidly, YOU MUST DECIDE. YOU MUST VOTE FOR CHANGE. Do you want a man who made many promises, but never produce no results, or give a fighting chance for someone who can and willing to stand/serve the country & her citizens?

STUDENTS MUST UNITE, DEMONSTRATE FOR THE GREATER CAUSE, AND STRIVING FOR CHANGE! This is my message for all Khmers.

if u...u..vote for him again...live with it...ok

Hey, if your expertise is in King-hood or administration, no demonstration is going to help you, suckers!

i wonder how students learnt or taught in Cambodian schools or universities? there are hundreds of bogus universities in Cambodia, and usually hoding a degree does not mean that students are up to standard.

The Black people march with Dr. MLK in thousands everywhere in America. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE, WHEN PEOPLE UNITE WITH A COMMON CAUSE. THE MANY WILL PREVAIL!

Because of the Black American, you and I are treated equally in America and other ethnicities benefit from their struggled. Ghai & Mussomelli already proved ah HunSen can be bended or twisted with some convincing maneuver. He will be out of the office by natural expectancy or Coup de tet by his own Son.

The headline: "Hun Sen shot in the blinded eye by his first borned."

Young men,
It is time to unite and looks for prosperity. The country needs young peoples as structures. There are good CPP and Bad CPP. Other parties are very well educated and logical. You are not just only vote but also need to get other to vote with you. A bundle of sticks is a lot stronger then few.

Here is something for the CPP worshippers to contemplate by an author who wrote "of mice and men". He coined a phrase, "REPRESSION WORKS ONLY TO STRENTHEN AND KNIT THE REPRESSED."

If you are the CPP clan, DO NOT attempt to analyze. You are not capable.

Stand up to survive yourself if you want to survive all those younger students.

Vote for change and we can see the brighter future.

Oh please! Stop treating Cambodian problem as civil right issue! Ahahhhahah

Cambodia is not America! Cambodia has been through Vietname War, Khmer Rogue (communist) and genocide, the Vietcong invasion and civil war and military coup...

Sorry to say that your Gandhi or MLK philosophy ain't going to work in communist country like Cambodia because Cambodia is being run by dictatorship and a dictator is not afraid to massacre anyone like the people in Myanmar!

I believe Cambodia will evolve into a democratic country one day! I believe Hun Sen has so many cold war issues remain to be solved with his former comrades!

What is the surprise here? As I said all along, when you followed Ah Chkout from the west, you'll be nothing more than slaves. Didn't I said that, time and time again?

Young educated people that I know who have good common sense often had two jobs offers within a year from graduation, and they get to choose the highest paid one. I am talking $300/month plus. This is like $36k/yr+ in the US.

I LOVE YOUR WORDS "ACHKOUT FROM THE WEST", COMRADE IN ARM.

I'M FROM THE WEST:
TO TELL CAMBODIAN YOUTH PARTICULAR GIRLS AND DON'T MAKE ANY CONFUSION IN OTHERWAY )THE TRUTH IS WE ARE HERE FACING A CRISIS OF SHORTAGE OF PROFESSIONAL NURSES. BY 2020, THERE ARE 250,000 NURSES NEED FOR THE JOB HERE IN USA.
HERE ARE A DRAFTS ARE BEING STUDIED, PHILIPPINE, OR THAILAND ARE PRIME LOCATIONS FOR RECRUITING. CAMBODIAN MAY BE CONSIDERED.

THERE ARE SOME PROBLEMS RECRUITING NURSES FROM CAMBODIA. THERE IS NO SINGLE ACCREDITED NURSING SCHOOL, NO NATIONAL EXAM TO VERIFY THE REAL QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR OVERSEAS JOBS, AND CANDIDATES THEMSELVES (ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AND QUALIFICATION).

DRAFT IF APPROVES, WILL BE SET UP (2012-13)A PARTICULAR LOCATION TO TRAIN NURSES IN CAMBODIA TO MEET US HEALTH CARE SERVICES STANDARD. NCLEX-NURSING BOARD EXAM WILL BE CONDUCTED AFTER THESE STUDENTS SUCCESSFUL COMPLETED THEIR VIGOROUS TRAINING. Well, we are not in salary competition with anyone right now. We are just trying to get by from the war.

As for nurse, we don't have any problem in that area. No one is dying left and right from unqualified nurse here.

Our problem is jobs, jobs, jobs that is needed to kick start our capitalist economy.

Cambodian leaders are fuck up!
Cambodian teachers are fuck up!
Cambodian educational institution is fuck up!
Cambodian curriculums are fuck up!
Cambodian environment is fuck up! Poor, dirty, and hungry and corrupted!
The requirement for job related experience to land a job increase from one year to 2 to 3 years of working on the job is fuck up! This is a joke!
Cambodian job market is fucked up! Not enough jobs to go around!
Cambodian experts so called economist is also fuck up! Who couldn't even balance their pocketbook! Too many things that are fuck up in Cambodia and it is very depressing to read about Cambodia these days!

My prediction for the next 10 to 20 years from now is that Cambodia will experience brain drain because no educated Cambodian professional will work for 30 dollars a month even 1000 dollars a month and most of educated Cambodian professional will be working oversea and Cambodia will be same poor and backward country as it is now!

The working concept for Cambodian professional is somewhat outdated! I suggest these Cambodian students study hard and become certify as professional in their field and get some work experience and be entrepreneurial and go into business for themselves to make more money and that should be the goal! The Cambodian professionals should be in the fucken business for themselves to provide goods and services to make the kind of money that they always wanted!

The worker mentality ain't going to do you any good in the 21st century because in most advance economy in the world require that workers to change with economic and political condition and the workers changing at least 8 different jobs in their life time!

There is no such thing as job security in this world! If you want security and stability and you should go into business for yourself! I have done it and it is hard but the reward is big!

By the way please don't pick the easy and simple profession because most people like to do the easy job and pick a profession where most people don't like or have the capability which will help eliminate some competition and you will have a better chance of succeeding in the job market! Ahhahahhahahahhahah

To 3:05AM Bonehead!

Don’t fool yourself with all the artificial economic growth! Any Cambodian economic growth will create ripple effect through out Cambodian economy! The growth in Cambodian economy will create demand in goods and services which will translate into job creation! How is it possible that Cambodia has double digits economic growth for many years and yet majority of Cambodian workers can’t find a fucken job? What is going on here unless somebody is lying about Cambodian economic growth and you are one of the liars!

Expansion in economy = Expansion in job market! This is economic 101!
