Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chunanond presided over the closing ceremony Saturday for the 24th Southeast Asian Games, held this year in northeast Thailand.
For the fourth consecutive time, the host country was the big winner at the games, the Thai News Agency reported. Thailand won 183 gold medals, while Malaysia followed with 68. Vietnam won 64, Indonesia 56, Singapore 43, the Philippines 41, Myanmar 14, Lao 5, Cambodia 2 and Brunei 1.
Most Valuable Player awards were given to two swimmers, Miguel Molina of the Philippines and Natthanan Jankrajang of Thailand. Both won four gold medals.
The games began Dec. 6 and were scheduled to coincide with the celebration of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 80th birthday.
Athletes competed in 43 sports. The next games are scheduled for 2009 in Vientiane, Laos. Only 25 sports are expected to be part of those games, because Laos is a landlocked country, eliminating windsurfing, sailing and triathlon, and because Vientiane has limited facilities.
