Rong Chhun, President of the Cambodia Independent Teachers’ Association (CITA), told RFA on Wednesday afternoon that the price of gasoline keeps on rising, and it seriously affects to the livelihood of poor Cambodian people, teachers, government workers, soldiers, factory workers, and those who earn about 5,6000 riels (slightly more than $1) per day. This daily earning is barely enough to buy about a little more than one liter of gasoline.

Rong Chhun said: “Price of gasoline in Cambodia in the past few months rises to 4,550 riels (~$1.14) per liter. Recently, it just increased by another 100 riels to reach 4,550 riels per liter in Cambodia. It’s strange in Cambodia, because on the International market, the price of a barrel of oil came down to $88.71, but in Cambodia, the price increases instead. We can see that the government is not paying attention to resolve the price issues on the Cambodian market at all. On top of that, it allowed oil companies to increase prices the way they want it.”

CITA sent an official letter on Wednesday to Hun Sen, asking the current prime minister to resolve this issue for Cambodian people so they may survive.

CITA indicated that if the price of gasoline still remains high, a peaceful mass protest will be organized soon to demand for a reduction of the price of gasoline in Cambodia. As of Wednesday, Hun Sen’s government did not provide any answer yet regarding this demand.

Bullshit, $88.71/barrel is not much drop. Plus, the supplier still have expensive stock to get rid off yet. Nothing can change in a flash. It will take a couple weeks before anyone could see the small change.

if the government does not regulate oil industry. it is getting out of hand and it is certainly will cambodian ecomony because of rising inflation and decreasing FDI. cambodia must regulates the oil industry to continue stimulation of the economy. the government must not let their friends doing what they want there are much greater cause for the nation...

Well, we do regulated to a certain extend, but we can't make all prices the same everywhere. Some place will not change their price because they bought gas before the price drop, and some place will charge more because of the location ... .

It is easier to talk than to do.

There are a lot of talking about the price of petrol but what is the action from the government voted by our peoples? What reaction to the people crisis for let it go wherever it goes?

It always goes back to the election. If the CITA has members who are not happy with the current government, vote out this government. The 2008 is not too far away. Get your voice heard by other peoples. Teachers have family. 5000 teachers equal to 10000 votes (wife and husband). That is just the start. A lot of political parties are talking about caring Cambodian concerns. Don’t just cry. Let’s do something

Well, the government can only do so much. They can give their workers paid raise to buy gas, or they can subsidized gas and not give anyone any raise. I believe people will preferred pay raise. That way, they can use the cyclo or bicycle and save the extra money for food.

The government must regulate to keep the economy growing. If they don't do, it will come back to hunt the government.

3:09, it is not too healthy to mess around with the capitalist economy at this point, but we will, once everyone is happy, rich and poor, alright?
