Hun Sen will open up Phnom Krovanh, Cambodia's last remaining untouched area, for exploitation and destruction of natural resources

Hun Sen opposes plan for the Cardamom Mountain Chain (Phnom Krovanh)

On Wednesday, prime minister Hun Sen opposed the plan to turn the Cardamom Mountain Chain (Phnom Krovanh) region into a world heritage site, as International conservation groups (BirdLife International, Conservation International, Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Alliance, the Wildlife Conservation Society and WWF) and the Cambodian Ministry of Environment (MoE) had planned for in the past three years.

Speaking at a seminar for the launch of a government study on trade strategy, the prime minister rejected the fact that international climate changes is due to natural resource exploitation in Cambodia. Not only that, he also opened the door for exploitation of the Phnom Krovanh area in order to (allegedly) bring benefit to the country’s development.

Hun Sen said: “Between conservation and development, if the underground is filled with valuable gold and diamonds, don’t be too astonished. Some countries cut all their forests for the development of their country, they use it all, now you come to prevent me just because we are doing (extracting natural resources) there, we go here, you prevented us, we go there, you prevented us. This is Cambodian sovereignty, whatever Cambodia does, don’t be too astonished. Therefore, I don’t agree with turning the Phnom Krovanh into a world heritage site. Just the hydroelectricity in the Phnom Krovanh area alone, it constitutes a battery for Cambodia.”

Phnom Krovanh is the sole remaining region in Cambodia which has not been destroyed yet. An anonymous MoE expert claimed that this region is rich in biodiversity, wildlife, natural resources and forest. Therefore, this region plays an important role in maintaining the climate balance in Cambodia, and it prevents flooding, the drying up of the Tonle Sap Lake (due to soil erosion), and it is also an important tourist attraction.

The expert added that he is concerned that developments in this region will destroy the area and bring major negative impacts on Cambodia.

On this issue, opposition leader Sam Rainsy said that he does not support the development of the Phnom Krovanh region also: “The way we saw the development in Cambodia is that: Cambodian lost their lands, lost their forest, lost their fishes, they cannot live with these developments, they are developments that destroy the country. This type of investment does not bring in progress to the nation, they only allow the crooked businessmen to prosper, and the corrupt government leaders are taking bribers from these crooked businessmen.”

The plan to turn Phnom Krovanh into a world heritage site to serve the interest of Cambodia was initiated by the MoE and several international organizations. Until now, not only is this plan not moving forward for the past three years due to government opposition, Hun Sen himself declared that he is opening up the region for investment and exploration also.

In the past, Cambodia was accused of allowing natural resources explorations, such as precious stones and woods, that led to an almost complete depletion of our forest resources.

hat do you know! Our Samdech HUN SEN had been developing Cambodia for 30 years from land concession to cutting down forest and outright land grabbing, fishing concession, rubber concession, oil concession and mineral concession on vast Cambodian territory and yet Cambodian people still live on less than one dollar a day!

I wonder why Samdech HUN SEN is such in hurry and very impatient to see the result of the previous development scheme! This is the sign of time when the last day of his power is coming to an end and he will try to do the maximum damage as much as he can because if our Samdech Hun Sen can't have it and nobody can have it either!

Why our Samdech Hun Sen has to destroy Cambodia in order to save Cambodia? Why! Why! Why!

he got to be out off his mind to do this. it is a no brainer.

Anonymous said...

Nope, not exactly, the onset of most of the 30 years was too violent to help anyone. The momentum from the KR regime was still rolling. We only started to turned thing around in the last 3 term. And we need to do more to keep in front of the inflation.

To 11:21PM

You said it yourself fool! For most of the 30 years Cambodia has nothing but violent promoted by AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave! More violent in 2007 such as shooting and evicting dirt poor Cambodian people to rob their land!

Poor excuse doing things in the name to combat inflation! You don't even understand the concept of inflation and all the economic mechanisms that can be used to control inflation without robbing Cambodian people of their land and their livelihood!

Just shut the fuck up ok!

Hun Sen and his advisers are short-sighted about future Cambodia. For the idea of development of Hun Sen in Phnom Kravinh doesn't imply to the concept of economic sustainability at all. Or he decided this, may be Hun Sen gives incentive to his crooked businessmen to exploit everything, not need to think about long term Cambodia.

His reason for development and it is Cambodian sovereignty is relevant. But it is relevant for his ignorance only.

Why?

Because if we reserve Phnom Krovinh as an international park enriched by diverse biodiversity, becoming world's heritage site, Phnom Kravinh can benefit Cambodia more than stupid idea of Hun Sen, and short-sighted idea of his crooked advisers.

To reserve Phnom Krovinh not only keep Cambodia green, but many tourists and researchers, especially those who favor to visit natural site will benefit Cambodian nation tremendously.

Phnom Krovinh will be long term beneficial place for Cambodians in both natural biodiversity and industry without smoke.

Hun Sen and his advisers might be blind, stupid and ignorant to understand the development industry without smoke. He is exploiting only Angkor Wat, the last pride of Cambodia. He doesn't understand to create any new pride for Cambodia under his leadership.

Hun Sen and his advisers can see that the opening of Phnom Krovinh for development, they will get more money from bribery and corruption.

Cambodian people and younger generations will face social crisis, natural disaster and disadvantage in next 20 or 50 or 100 years from this stupid leadership.

12:13, you can do both: First, you search for valuable resource. If you find some, you used it to develop the country. Then you replant some trees back up, and voila, no lost of anything.

Wrong, 11:36, we didn't created the violent. At the fall of the KR regime, people just rob or looting other people because they were desperate for foods. Plus, the starvation didn't end in the flash either. There were lot of malnutritions people that were still dying left and right from the KR regime ... . And then there was the KR insurgent who don't want to give up their power, and they create all sort of problem ... And even after the Peace Accord was signed the violent still didn't stop until a few years after ... Therefore, before we could focus on rebuilding the country, we were like in the mid's 90's already.

viets in Cambodia behind hun sen order him to destroy all Cambodian resources and when there are no more resources vietnam will destroy PM Hun Sen and his family later.
This action we should discus with World heritage organizations to talk with PM for a second thought.

Stupid man, after the KR, Hun Sen did nothing to Cambodia. Hanoi Yuan did everything for Cambodia.

So, Hun Sen now is the real agent of Yuan when you say this, I can see it from your point of view.

1:14, wake up, will ya? Searching for Natural resources will not cause any wild life extinction, okay? At worse, the men will eat a some wild birds and monkeys for a few years while they are away from civilization. That's about it.

Anonymous said...

Yes, 1:13, you are essentially correct that PM was Yuon agent during the liberation, and that is what made it easy for Yuon to defeated the KR regime, and that is why he's our hero today. FYI, we didn't expected him to do everything himself, alright?

1:58 AM

Digging minerals or reforming the land for development will not destroy wild life? what base of knowledge and brain are you getting from?
-------------------

2:04AM

Yes, you are agreeing that Hun Sen is Youn's agent, and nowadays he is still in power because Yuan understood that to install Hun Sen in power will offer them huge benefit especially reserve their colonization of Don Dien in Cambodia.

So, congratulation Youn.

But it is sad because Youn's troops in Cambodia is not recognized as liberation by international communities and Cambodian peoples, it is communist ideology spreading and aggressive invasion to plunder Cambodian territory land.

Yes, Yes you are absolutly right 2:04 AM, Your hero Sam Dach Siiiii chho Hun Xen does his job much more better than your former gang leader Penn Sovan. He does what he was told to do even to hand over parts of khmer's land to Yuon or to kill his own people as you've seen in the recent days.
And Your Sam Dach siiii chho said he will stay in power for ever. I am not surprise with that. You know why? He have to get his job done, i mean Cambodia in't part of VN yet.
But any way, you're a smart guy.
Continue your slave's job

Hun Sen is not my prime minister and I am not proud of him. This man has brought Cambodia shame after shame. His legacy will be as bad as the Khmer Rouge. He has a choice to do good or do evil; whatever legacy he want to leave that is for him to be chosen. The truth don't lie. He should know there are millions other Cambodian are being affected by his decision; unless he does not care. I just hope some day this man would realize that...

3:00, stop jumping any conclusion here. Let them search for valuable resource first, alright. Once they find something, then we'll figure out on how to extract the resource without impacting the wild life reservation.

And yes, we can considered PM as Yuon agent because he provided Yuon with information that is needed to ousted the KR regime, and yes he was installed to lead the country afterward, and Yes and this whole thing aint free, but no one mind paying Yuon for their work. Hell, anything is better than living under a brutal KR regime. I am sure you'll agree if you were in our shoes.

As for Yuon being recognizing as liberator by the UN or whatever, Frankly, we don't give a damn because we are no longer prisoner of the brutal regime.

And yes, PM Hun Sen didn't get PhD from Hanoi for nothing either. He got it for his merit. Hanoi is no westerner that print out PhD like newspapers.

4:03 AM

It is endless debate: KR brutality & Youn invasion. But for the genuine benefit of Cambodian nation and its brighter future, why stupid guy like you has tried to compare current corrupting government with KR?

Or Hun Sen current government has done nothing better than KR because he is a full lackey of Youn?

Hun Sen and his gangsters are again and again have used development as propaganda but destroying poor peoples, so what is purposes of development? - to find richness for his families and those rich peoples, or to improve lives for the poors?

Corrupting government will not try to improve the poors.
