Ranariddh calls on ’97 grenade attack victims to sue; Khieu Kanharith: if the wound does not hurt, don’t poke it

The NRP issued a statement on Wednesday 05 December 2007 whereby Prince Ranariddh, the party president, called on all the victims of the 1997 grenade attack in front of the National Assembly to bring their cases to court, and the prince guaranteed that he will find lawyers to defend them.

The NRP statement was published on Thursday’s edition of the Kampuchea Thmei newspaper, and it called on all the victims of the 30 March 1997 grenade attack in front of the National Assembly to bring their cases to court to seek justice for these victims.

The statement claimed that the NRP guarantees to find lawyers to coordinate with the victims to prepare their lawsuits, and these will lawyers will represent them in court also. The statement also criticized opposition leader Sam Rainsy who decided to pull his lawsuits from both the Cambodian and the US tribunals, and the prince accused Sam Rainsy of writing an apology letter to express his regret for his accusation on Hun Sen.

In reaction to the prince’s statement, Khieu Kanharith, the minister of information and government spokesman, told the Kampuchea Thmei newspaper that if a wound does not hurt, there is no point in poking it with a stick. He added that if the prince knows very well the grenade attackers, it means that the prince himself was also involved in this attack.

Khieu Kanharith said that the grenade attack took place in 1997 when the prince was the No. 1 prime minister, and the government authority investigated the case carefully with the participation of the FBI. Why didn’t the prince help provide information to the authority at that time? Why is he concerned about this right now only? Khieu Kanharith added that, legally speaking, the person who knew this event very well, he should cooperate with the authority, but instead he chose to remain silent. This means that the prince was also involved in the collusion in this affair and he was an accomplice also. Therefore such a person should be punished by the law.

Khieu Sopheak, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, also told the Kampuchea Thmei newspaper that this 1997 grenade attack incident took place when the prince was the No. 1 prime minister, therefore he should know about this issue since that time, why does he act as if he knows about (the real killers) only now? Khieu Sopheak said that, as the No. 1 prime minister at the time, he was also the top responsible person. However, the prince is only now acting as if he just knows clearly about this issue, or he is acting as the new instigator to the investigation, this means that he was also an accomplice in this affair.

If HUN SEN lost the 2008 election, one day I will take my shoe hitting on your head, Khieu Kanharith. Beacause you are the person who always talk to support the side of gansters

A government of the people would make efforts to find justice for victims of crime, and it would welcome any action for that purpose.

Judge Ira Glaser of New York (US)said: "the government wins when justice is done."

We are not talking about justice, but about a politcal maneuver of a prince in desperation. He was the Prime Minister in that time and until 2006 the close ally of Hun Sen. He hasn't done anything when it was possible, so don't trust him now.

I used to think Kanharith is the most idiot and arrogance person. But now this supid prince is getting worsen.

Without the green light from Prime Minister no 1 and no 2 (two heads with three eyes) the 30 March 1997 granade attack would not occurred.

Ranariddh goes to hell, mate!

Frankly, the grenade attack is a conspiracy to make the incumbent government look bad. As simple as that. You can tell that it is political because it was about a year before the 1998's election. Thus, I really don't believe that government members is involved because it is political suicide for them to have such an incident attached to their image.

10:38, stop dreaming, there were no fake ballots. If there was any, all they have to do is to throw it out.

Hi Dr. Lao at al,

I am grateful to your contribution to Cambodia as a whole.

Of course, Rannariddh is hitting on head. The grenade attack in 1997 is sensitive and it is the important one in US court that forced Hun Sen to open compromising with Sam Rainsy.

However, Sam Rainsy is not yet stopped from this justice finding. But now he has temporarily altered it and accomplished other missions for the benefits of Cambodia.

Sam Rainsy should keep silent watching Rannariddh and Hun Sen face in the international court, especially US court (Hun Sen is really thoughtful about this). Ranariddh has some more evidences than FBI and Sam Rainsy.

Ranariddh is not unemployed now during his leisure time to read newspaper in abroad to file this verdict.

Good Job Ranariddh and NRP!

Yeah sure, 12:49, when you grew horn, we'll arrest the perpetrator, fair?

Either one is good for the country. KI please stop giving voice to Ranarith. He is an idiot. His action is nothing but trying to get in the country without accepting the fault or explaining clearly why he is not guilty.

All Khmer politicians should strain from individual interest, should look far beyond, don't let vietnam hide their land minds in Cambodia like our honorable Mr.NOUN KHOEUN had mentioned in his book"LA MARCHE VERS -OUEST" of vietname.
Don't have to big, just do what you can do.

Mr. 5:31 PM and other fellow commentators,

Thank you very much for your reactions to my comment.

My full name is Lao Mong Hay, with Lao as my family name and Mong Hay as my first name. This is the name my beloved parents gave me when I was born. My first primary school teacher spelt it in French for me.

I use captial letters for my family name LAO to indicate that it is a family name (following the convention to spell family names in capital letters in France or some other countries).

It is our Khmer convention to address people by calling them Mr, Mrs, Miss followed by their first name or their full name. For example Mr. Mong Hay or Mr. Lao Mong Hay. According to western convention, the family name is last. That's why the family name is also called "last name". There is also a "middle name" in western countries. In writing, an initial or single first letter is used for this middle name. In western countries I would be addressed as Mr. Lao.
