Cambodia, Myanmar need to enhance intra-regional economic cooperation

VNA (Hanoi)

Phnom Penh, Dec 1 (VNA) - Cambodia and Myanmar need to enhance economic cooperation with other ASEAN member countries, especially Viet Nam and Laos with an aim of narrowing the development gap, the two countries' prime ministers said.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his visiting Myanmar counterpart, Thein Sein, held talks in Phnom Penh on November 30.

The two PMs said that situation in Myanmar is currently being improved, especially after the two meetings between the government's representative and the opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. PM Hun Sen emphasised that the international community should create an opportunity for Myanmar to find a solution for reconciliation between the government and the opposition party.

Cambodia supports the United Nations' contributions to the process through the UN special envoy on Myanmar, he added.

The two PMs agreed that to promote direct investment, the two countries will create favourable conditions for the business circle in the two countries and then sign an investment protection agreement.
