Stephen D. Mull, Acting Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Political-Military Affairs of the US State Department, came to visit Cambodia, and during his visit, he considers Cambodia as “rising star in the world.”
The Koh Santepheap newspaper reported this Friday that Stephen Mull made his comment during his meeting with Hor Nam Hong, the minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on 05 December 2007, at Hor Nam Hong’s ministry.
During the meeting, Stephen Mull told Hor Nam Hong that the US highly praised Cambodia which just got of war not long ago, but that it has built itself up following the path of democracy in order to bring in progress in all fields.
Stephen Mull considers Cambodia as rising star, not only in Asia, but as the new rising star in the world. He also said that the renown of the Cambodia new star lays in its national development based on democracy, and this is also a contribution to the preservation of peace in the world.
Hor Nam Hong thanked the US for providing aid Cambodia in healthcare, and in demining. Regarding the security issue, Hor Nam Hong indicated that, currently, Cambodia and the US maintain a good cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
Furthermore, Hor Nam Hong said that Cambodia supports the declaration for the general formation of a task force to fight against nuclear terrorism raised by US President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin on 15 July 2006.

Recent history had Nguyen Van Thieu/Lon Nol, this time we got new actors playing the classic roles on an old story.
The unknown is how China is going to work to win the favors this time. 12:03, you can't compare Cambodia in the 60's to today administration because in the 60's, the administration had it made and they were not broke. they always have enough money at they disposal to work with. The corruption were lover then because everyone in general were not as desperate as today.
On the other hand, we don't have anything to work with after the fall of the KR regime. People was still dying of disease and famine. There were looters everywhere. We were lucky to find food to feed ourself. The violent was everywhere... . And now we are just starting to recover.
If you want to make a fair comparison of the 60's to us today, you must put them in the same chaos condition as we were at the fall of KR. If the 60's administration can recovered from it without begging anyone for money, then we'll take our hat off to them, but I doubt that they are capable of such miracle.

You guys should give Hun Sen some credits. Even though he's a dictator, Cambodia has been progressing very nicely in a short period of time. Cambodia has just reborned not too long ago. Cambodia just starts to enjoy peace and stability... the last 6 years or so. When was the last time everyone in here went to visit Cambodia? Have you noticed that most of the national roads are all repaired and very smooth too... Countless of concrete buildings--homes, condo, shops etc.-- are being constructed every year. Man, after the Khmer Rouge Regime, our country was left with uneducated people, left with orphans, left with women without husbands, basically total mass. It takes time to regenerate educate people, to restore the country to get back on her feet again.
Stephen might have exaggerated a bit, but there are some validities to his speech.

Economic growth is one bright spot of many dark spots of this administration and it still remain to be seen... Of course we see what changing in Cambodia today, but that doesn't tell the whole story of the situation for the state of nation. The economic growths for Cambodia have come with great tradoffs for deforestation, land grabbing, inhumane working condition, natural resources depleting, corruption and host others. With some infrastructures improvment such as roads, water lines, trafic lights, electrictiy are only some of the basic necessities at bare miminum; even Burma has better infrastructures than Cambodia. With millions of Int'l aids each these are of expected from the government and Cambodia must not stay at bare miminum especially when the prime minister comparing Cambodia to some dirt poor countries. What's wrong about this admistration is their lack of interest protecting Cambodia territory; their greed for power over the interest of the nation, their greed for corruption, their political controlled justice system, their lack of law enforcement, their lack of vision, their illegal border treaties with Vietman and their lack of interest defending Cambodia with neighboring countries especially Vietnam.
Uncle SAM has a history of supporting dictators around the world! Such Suharto of Indonesia, Ferdinand Marco of Philippine, Saddam Hussein of Iraq, Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan...but sometimes Uncle SAM kicked their arse too! Ahahhahhah
