Amid Landgrabbing, Attack On Lawmaker Unsurprising

Letter sent by Dr. Lao Mong Hay
to The Cambodia Daily

Attacking a person is indeed a crime, and the attacker must be punished for it, subject of course to the state of his mental health.

However, Ros Sovann's attack on lawmaker Chin Kim Sreng, brutal as it was, should not be treated as a crime like any other. It should be taken very seriously as a loud call for justice for himself and for other victims of the injustices of land grabbing, which the system of justice of the country is either unable, unwilling or not allowed to correct and prevent.

One can only imagine how strongly such injustices might have affected a young man like Ros. In Cambodia there are many people, including youths like Ros, who are victims of land grabbing. These acts have been going on for years and have forced, at times brutally, many families out of their homes and lands without fair compensation. Many of those victims may have the same hatred for the country's rulers and may be as revengeful as him.

The time is overdue for the government to put a halt to land grabbing and for the institutions of the rule of law, especially the courts, to correct the injustices that land grabbing has created. This must be done before the situation creates more people like Ros with hatred for their rulers in their hearts.

In this incident, Ros Sovann has beaten one person in vengeance. What could other people with similar hatred do next?

Other people can run to the jungle like hun sen and go to war against him. Let him get taste of the poison he's creating by being a slave to youn and don't care about his people. This time it won't be call Khmer rouge, it'll be called "Khmer Justice"; and Khmer Justice's mission is reclaim justice for Khmer and her nation.

There is no u-turn for the rulers to halt land grabbing.

Most of land grabbing happened at sub-national level who have no chance to enjoy with(corruption) as the national level (ministers) have.

They are forced to run the office with a very little or almost no financial support. To servive themself, to feed the family, to provide better education to their kids as their superiors do, to enjoy their life, and more importantly to distribute "gift" to their constuencies; it's the way they must do.

The current regime who use gift as vote buying as tool to retain in power seems to pay less attention on their staff wage. More than that they force their subodinates to help them to campaign, actually to distribute the gift, without providing them the financial support. As instrcucted by superioirs, to retain in the post, and to earn for living, the land grabbing is the best way to solve all the problems.

it's clear that land grabbing will continue, unless people see the causes of it - that's to change the regime. Stop voting for those who grab your land!

We see development in some places, but the Dou, Denh, Dot policy for development is what I call "inhumane development" which can yield "horrible consequences".

Sorry folks there is no more jungle to hide and wage another war. It is the 2008 elections that they should use. Waiting for 2013 can be a bit too late.

I agree with this article. It is a wake up call for all Cambodian leadership and laws makers to understand that Cambodia landgrabbings are now boiling at a very high point and there will be a rise up very soon because people have now nothing more to loose except their life. Some people can be tortured, can be put in a hard condition but there are many other cannot even stand for a loose of face. When they have nothing to loose, they will fight for their last breath.
