Translated from Khmer by Socheata
After it was recently learnt that a Thai film producer wanted to film a documentary about the history of King Jayavarman VII, the Association of Cambodian Writers (ACW) presided by Oknha Sim Vanna, sent an application to the cinematography department of the Ministry of Culture, to request an authorization to produce this film by itself instead. The Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper quoted Kong Kantara, the director of the cinematography and art promotion department of the Ministry of Culture, saying recently that the ACW sent in an application to his department to request the authorization to produce a film about King Jayavarman VII. Kong Kantara said that, currently, his department is conducting a research on the history of King Jayavarman VII, however, he said that this research will take a long time to complete before a movie script can be produced. Regarding the cost of production, Kong Kantara said that, based on his own estimates, the video filming of such production would cost between $3 to 5 million, and if it would be filmed in 35-mm format, the cost would be between $5 to 10 million.

Oh!Majesty come back.China and Vietnam communist killed all your people. And stole all your land.Survivor are still in danger! Please come with USA and save them.
I think it is an excellent idea to produce a film about King Jayavarman VII. It would be a very benefitial for the Khmer younger generation to learn about our Khmer history. But I have to make one request - DON'T LET SI-HANOI OR SI-HAK-MONEY WRITE SCRIPTS OR DIRECT THE FILM.
Cambodians should invest more money because they will earn the moneys back or more later.
The filming of the legendary King Jayavarman VII documentary film will undoubtedly make him (Jayavarman VII) come alive once again.
Moreover, this will offer Khmer-blood people the opportunity to provide ducumentary and historic evidences and irrefutable proof to prove to Thailand and its people who are unflinchingly and ancessantly and ignorantly led to believe that the KHMER cultural icon (our splendid Angkor Wat Temple)is (still)belonging to the Thai. Further, this film will make unequically clear that this ANGKOR WAT is belongs to Khmer-blood people.
I will certainly and categorically unpin the filming of this unforgettable ducumentary film of our TRUE king (Jayavarman VII) for Khmer-blood people and many more generations.
That said, the rich capitalist oppressors should divide the profit in which profited from our cultural icon, the Angkor Wat Temple, and distributed to the underprivileged people.
Angkor Wat forever! I will shall love you until my last breath.
On behalf of ALL Khmer-blood people, we'd like to thank you for being our TRUE KING (Jayavarman VII). Your national treasure made us proud, and, therefore, we will treasure this splendid cultural icon as long as we live. Again, we thank you for your gift.
Khmer forever! Yuon out of Cambdia!
we are kaun chaov ,we are true khmer
HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Happy New Year!
Khmer forever! Yuon out of Cambodia!
This is great news to hear. Look at the western, they filmed most of their pass history leaders. Example, the Alexander, Troy ect..
Go Camabodia go!
If is not film in 35-mm, don't film it at all. It won't look good, just like 99% of khmer movies now, look like video.
For God's sake, why?
Sihanouk had managed to destroy it all. Sihanouk had destroyed patriotism; Sihanouk had destroyed almost 2 millions of Khmer (including Viet, Chinese, Cham and many other inhabitants of Cambodia).
To serve the Viet/YUON's interest, Sihanouk had managed to produce a boatload of worthless offspings specifically Rannaridh (Sihanouk the Playboy Jr), and Sihamoni (Sihanouk woman's side, the queer Prince Jr).
Even as almost to his last breath, Sihanouk still manages to serve his master - the Viet/Yuon!
Sihanouk had managed to crack a few eggs in the process to make the "killing Fields" looked good: killing a couple of his own offsprings.
And yes, Sihanouk had managed to CRUSH khmer's spirit once and for all in favor of the Viet race by way of the very same infamous "Killing Fields"...
As Cambodian/Khmer, need we say more?
And For God's sake, Sihanouk, why???
For our beloved motherland, Cambodia, may almighty God save you from the annexation by the Viet and from all of the Vietnamization processes.
The government must control the copyright very well, otherwise they will lose all the money they had invest.
Sihanouk loves cinema, cute girls, palace etc...
Is there someone nice enough to film him?
Michael Moore will do a good job on Comrade Sihanouk life film.
This is my Point of view,First need to ask our people for their opinion and then we need to do the reseach from A through Z to find out every little things about life of King Jayavarman VII , Because this is very important part of process making a film.
we need to give every little details about the movie, If we going to do it, we going to do it right.
We need to let the whole world known about our Khmer History.
Knowing already the quality of film and intellectual shallowness of current Cambodian scripts ( Not even close to what real life situations would turn out, cheesy conversations ) I would deny this project indefinitely until the Cambodian film industry can reach a maturity at least comparable to the 60s and surpassed that.
This is just someone feeling the urge because they want to beat someone else to do it, they are immature. This film will cause harm to J IV that will never be healed again by future films.
Please, don't hasty. Som Kom Tok-lahon. Wait.
Don't Kill J IV once again. Wait.
Make sure gets archaelogists/sociologists/anthropologists/&...ologists from the West because they have better knowledges in Documentary films. DON'T LET THE THAIS/VIETS BEATS US TO THE PUNCH OR TWISTED THE TRUTH.
I am 12:52, I agree with you both,1:01 and 1:35.
If we going to do it, we going to need all kind of idia to making this film for our children.
No matter 1,3 or 10 years from Now.

Tourists complain of difficulties, negative experiences
Foreign visitors in Vietnam (photo: danang.gov)
VietNamNet Bridge – The number of foreign travelers to bordering nations, Laos and Cambodia, are half those coming to Vietnam. However, international visitors’ complaints reveal that Vietnam has much to learn from its neighbors.
Where has all the hospitality gone?
A traveler nicknamed Eileen 76 on the Lonely Planet tourism forum, wrote: “My friends and I just got back from a five day trip to Hanoi, Vietnam and frankly, it was a trip from hell. Why? From the moment we stepped on the plane (AirAsia), you get ignorant and stubborn Vietnamese who turned on their mobiles mid-flight! Not one, but several, despite sterm reprimands from the stewardess.
The next day, I had my mobile stolen from my backpack. We were standing on a sidewalk near the lake, trying to figure out which road we were on and where to go when I felt a tug from behind. I turned around and saw a guy standing too close to me. I yelled at him and my first reaction was to quickly check my bag to see whether my digicam and money were missing.
The ‘expletive’ yelled back but I ignored him and walked away when I realized that, thank god, that I still had my money and camera. It was 2 to 3 minutes later that I suddenly remembered my phone, which was kept in another outer compartment and sure enough, it was gone!! And so was the sketchy man!!To add insult to injury, a shopkeeper was sitting and saw the whole thing, and yet, he did nothing! We were less than one meter away from him. What’s wrong with these people anyway?Oh, who can forget the horrendous traffic. Normal traffic rules don’t exist here. As far as I know, red means stop, while green means go. But to the Hanoians, both colors meant the same thing – go, go, go. I lost count of the number of times we were nearly mown down by motorbike when a pedestrian light was clearly green and intersecting traffic lights were red. I know they like to honk at anything and everything that moves, but does that mean it absolves them of all responsibility? I mean, just coz you honked while riding your bike against traffic and nearly crashing into pedestrians, does not necessarily mean you can simply shrug it off with the excuse ‘I used my horn didn’t I’?I’ve been to Cambodia where the traffic was equally chaotic (in Phnom Penh at least), but at least there was method to the madness. There, you just cross and drivers will automatically avoid you, provided you don’t make any sudden moves or freeze halfway. But try to apply that system in Hanoi, and you’re liable to lose a few limbs, if not your life.”
Regarding service quality, Eileen wrote: “And what’s up with Hanoian’s attitude anyway? They’re rude, crude and uncouth. OK, so they don’t really speak English. Fine. I can accept that. What I can’t stomach is the way they don’t even look you in the eyes when you speak to them. There was this incident at the Water Puppet Theatre where we wanted 3 tickets for the 8.30pm show. The ticketing girl curtly said "no" but tore three tickets and gave them to us. We asked (politely) what does no mean – is it no, there are no more seats for the 8.30 show or no, you don’t have VND20,000 seats?? (There were two classes of seats - VND20,000 and VND40,000).She just mumbled No again and eventually figured out the tickets she sold us were VND40,000 for the 9.15pm show. We told her we wanted the cheaper seats and again, got the mumbled no. During the entire (one-sided) conversation, the girl was scribbling on some papers on her desk! And she didn’t even look up while we were trying to communicate!!! In the end we gave up and just gave her the money. But what happened if a person didn’t want tickets but just some information? We encountered the same sour-faced and negative attitude among merchants around the Old Quarter market area when we asked them to take some pictures. For example, we went out to sampled biahoi (the austere local beer halls). The restaurant owner’s smile turned sour and her attitude immediately changed for the worst when we asked 2 simple questions: 1. How much (a reasonable enough request); and 2. Can I take a picture?
And let’s not forget the attitude of Hanoians in general. They either poke (if you’re lucky), shove or ram you aside if you happen to walk a little slower or disrupt their route. And what about their inability to queue? What’s worse is they think its their god-given right to cut queue? Is all this really necessary? And before all you guys take potshots at me, note that I’m an Asian and as polite as possible, with smiles and thank yous (in the local language) to the people I meet whenever I travel. I’ve been to a number of countries, from Asia to Europe and in all my travels, never have I experienced a colder, ruder or more selfish people than in Hanoi. What happened to the reputed Vietnamese hospitality touted by everyone?
Although Vietnam is more developed than its immediate neighbors Cambodia & Laos, it still has a lot to learn from them. They should learn from their regional peers how to be warm and friendly. It’s a smile here or a friendly greeting there that really makes a visitor feel welcome and makes all the difference in the world.”
She concluded: “Thank you very much, Hanoi, for your "wonderful" hospitality. Return to Vietnam??? Not in this lifetime. Give me Cambodia or Laos or even Thailand anyday.”
A tour guide that doesn’t like tourists
An Australian visitor, Harry Ledger, who lived in Vietnam for ten months, shared the same opinion. He wrote about his “hard” trip to Ha Long Bay on BBC. According to Ledger, a tour guide named Nguyen slept and snored the whole way from Hanoi to Ha Long, except for when he led visitors to a souvenir shop, which offered items for double Hanoi prices.
This tour guide sometimes mumbled negatively and Ledger remembers most him saying “I don’t like tourists. But foreign girls are really beautiful and you will see that when you go to Ha Long.”
At noon, Ledger’s group stopped to eat lunch at a restaurant located near a railway station. It was terrible with overdone and cold food like prisoner rations. But “superintendent” Nguyen told Ledger that he hadn’t acquired a taste for Asian food because he was a foreigner.
Ledger wrote that he had lived in Asia for years, at least ten months in Vietnam and that lunch was the worst meal he had eaten here.
“But I and other visitors knew that if we complained, nothing would change. Finally, we arrived at the wharf. I saw hundreds of cranky boats swarming, aimed at the tourists. And a rickety, double-deck, 45-seat boat was ours,” he wrote.
In another article on BBC, Ledger related the desperation of another western visitor, Anna Skodvedt-Sundling, who wished for a quick end to her trans-Vietnam tour.
This Swedish girl, 26, was among the increasing number of independent tourists traveling to Vietnam on a trans-Southeast Asia tour. The girl said she was disappointed. Everything becomes uninspiring and she only wanted to go to Laos quickly because each day she was forced to argue so often with merchants over being cheated out of money. She thinks Thailand is more hospitable and convenient.
Ben Harper, from the UK, said: “When I had my pocket picked in Saigon, police told me to report the theft to tourism police. But tourism policemen couldn’t speak English so I had to return to the local police station. When I got there, they told me it was too late and threw me out. They thought it was funny.”
The above complaints are specifically aimed at tourist managers and Vietnamese locals.

Instead of Making Jayavarman7 ,why do we make :" Kompook Te Ong " ?
Did we hear that Japan let us borrow $100 millions a year for less than 0.1% of interest. What for the next??? Use some of it and bring this film to life. Come on! show the world what this great king was made of. Get Japan herself to help out. Great technology country such as Japan is what we need and why not? Give her a chance to see where her money is going and let her be a part of this success story. Film is also a fabulous business. This time is for all humanity across the globe. If The American wants to help, invite her in. She is the best film maker in the world!
Ordinary Khmers
A lot of Asian people and not Just Cambodian can take a role or employment from this project. Imagine, the slaves or the troops that King JV had employed to build his empire and Angkor City and if the producer really think about creating a job from it. Job! Job! Job! it's coming big or small, but a lot of people will get a pay check and imagine having 500 women performer Apsara dancers in one shot during the innauguration of Angkor and the future of silk producers? Let's please the eyes of the world and ourself like no one ever did it before.
I have no faith in khmer filmmaker. They need help from outsider. So far I haven't seen a decent film from khmer at all. None. We need good filmmaker to pull this off. Do it right or don't do it at all.
Let it be clear that there should be no involvement from the Thaicong and the Vietcong regarding the Khmer culture!
To create a motion picture by using the film in 35-mm format is a joke! It is like using mud to paint the Sistine Chapel!
its a waste of time and money. a Joke. If you want to keep his memory alive teach better accurate history in Cambodian school.
No haste, wait until we truly have a capability. There is no rush, nobody in the world cares the heck about how fabulous or great our past kings are, only our ordinarily people will care.
and with Khmer ordinarily films, it takes away interest from any subject, do you want khmer to remember J IV as the guy from a horrible Cambodian movie?
I don't. Films and jobs please. Don't bank on it, use the money Japan lend to create realistic job, opening up more factories and creating more entrepreneurs in different areas of Khmer economy so that when we have to pay back, we know where to get that money from.
Film industry only can give job when its stable, thriving and with standard and quality people can't wait to spend their weekend to go to.
A single film is a droplet of water, it provide no money no job. False hopes.
Think realistically. Stop fantasying.
I just wondered ,if jayavarman 7 was great as told ,why Angkor was overrun and ransacked by enemies ?
Angkor bagame weaker simply be cause, the great kings like JV 7 die out. it simply ran out of supplies. With no water management, no food, the city of angkor just die... so People migrated to the noeboring countries.
Obviously man power and food was everything during that time. Poor governed.. just like now modern day, many people are still trying to migrate to USA or AUS ... brother and Sister betray each other to stay survive. if you say enamies defeated us ...Wrong.. We defeated our selves.
So Producing this film is a good idea many Khmer would be woken up from the dead and stay Cambodia.
The image of angkor must be in a perfect condition.. as good as new .. to make more sense ..
dont forget all the kings yesovarman ,dvaravith suryavarman a lot mores etc but its good to start whit jaya 7
wow
Royalty such as Princess Bopha devi needs to check this article out. She may be an older woman now, but do you rememer when you were young and vibrant? You weren't just a Princess, but you were a Princess with beautiful talent and one of the Cambodian striking star. It is this Apsara dancer roll that propelled you to the top and be a well known woman. Cambodian young women today need you to inspire them. They need you to bring back those gracious and wonderful memory. They need you to inspire them learn how to act and direct as you would today. It's your chance once again to tell the world that you are not a tax pager-wasting, but a one woman who can take this incridible roll of the Cambodian culture to next level.
Factory job is one thing, but not for everyone. Perhaps not all of the Cambodian young ladies want to work in the factory day in and day out. There has to be something more and different. Think of those Cambodian jewelries that adorned the arms, the necks, the heads or the body of Apsara. It will be your to redesign and Voila into the market!!! The list can go on forever.....Your highness, your grandmother Queen Kossamak brought
Apsara to life from the wall of Angkor Wat, remember? Being an interpreneur has nothing to do with one job category, or is it?
Ordinary Khmers
Wow,
Pls note that there were 7 high commanders in the military system in the past, i.e. Jayavarman 1 - 7, at which 4 persons to standby at Cambodia (central territory), and other three to standby at sub-territories - Siem 1, Laos 1,and Khmer Krom 1.
Jayavarman was not the king. Anyway, at the late of 13 century, Jayavarman 7 took power and announced himself to be the king, and he killed 500 Preah Pisnokar (Khmer scholars/parliament/Engineers) at Taprohm temple compound who rejected his order.
After his failure against VN soldiers at Champa battlefield, he returned to die in front of Bayon temple. Few days after his death, Siem and Laos had announced to separate from central Cambodia.
He was not a great king, but he just a worst leader in the Khmer history.
Prof. Keng Vansak's commendations remains correct.
This is just a short note for you all. Believe or not believe is up to your consideration and further research.
For Goodwill,
Data
First I agreed we should have documentary the biography of our great king.
But what I disagreed is to have this company do the filming. To me, it seems huge exageration or lie on the part of their budget. We need to have the entiy with integrity and responsibility.
They will lost the money and better to be done by Holly Wood!
SHOULD SJ7 reborned as Sdach Korn and Sdach Korn was reborned as HX?
OH!!!!!!!!OH!
by the way HX turn Cambodia to a creat coutry again by change it name to Indo China or Vietnamomis!
That's what some of those 100 millions bucks are for. It didn't seem like a whole lot to American, but some great executive Producers in Hollywood might like to help and wouldn't mind checking into this project. It's the real Historic film and Angkor is now The world heritage site. This great King has a lot to do with it.
Hey 9:41! How did Napoleon of France die? He may die in whatever way, but when he was alive young and strong, Napoleon is France from head to toe and France conquered Europe during Napoleon's reign. You need to understand the real man that made Angkor still standing after 1000 years later and not the man that die under the Bayoun Tree, o.k?!!!!!! You head is full of shit!
You shit head know alot of history Ha!
Dr. Vansac should go back to school to learn aboult culture and human development!
Prince Ranarith should quit politic and be here. He likes making movie. Leave Cambodia to Mr. Sam Rainsey or other politician to handle instead is better. His wife Neak Mneang Phalla might know a few tricks adding to this spicy script. His ex-wife Princess Marie had been trying for years to promote Khmer's silk fabric. Well, what you do you think, Mam? If you don't want to get involved, because it was too close to your ex-, you daughter, Princess Rattana Devi might be able take that part for you. This where all Khmer'talent and real artistic thinkers should be.
What!!!! RanOtrith as J7 it better HX! XN think so!
Who is going to be the actor?
Do studen need not to read history book any more?
No! It won't be Prince Ranarith playing the King. There are plenty of Khmer Actors that can use the part.
Sophal has well define lips and nose that feature Khmer men. His masculin jaw, dreamy eyes and taller frame may very well fit for a powerful King.
Also allowing the under previlege young men and young women to take up the part is the most honorable way to create this film.
O.K
Star search is to find out who should be an actor, The applications should open for all native cambodian people Only.
After the applications excepted, They need to be trained from A through Z.
We all understand that knowledge is power.
Khmer DJ;
wow, good idea. Lets hope that the Thai people don't get all the credit or try to creat bullshit about movie.
DO NOT LET THAI FILM PRODUCERS PRODUCE THIS MOVIE. THEY ARE PLAYING TRICKS! YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER NOT TO TRUST THEIR ASS!
DON'T LET BITCH ASS THAI FILMER PRODUCE THIS MOVIE. THEY ALL PLAY TRICKS. NO THAI IS TRUE.
