Tuesday 22 January will be the anniversary of the death of Chea Vichea, the unionist who was assassinated in 2004. An opposition MP is asking that a statue be built for him, meanwhile, the Free Trade Union of Workers in the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC) asked for the authorization to organize a gathering to commemorate this date.
Opposition MP Son Chhay, a member of the Sam Rainsy Party, wrote, on 18 January, a letter to King Sihamoni in which he asked to honor the memory of Chea Vichea by granting him the title of “Hero of Cambodia’s Workers.”
Chea Vichea, the former president of the FTUWKC, was assassinated in the morning of 22 January 2004, in front of a newspapers kiosk close to the Wat Langka pagoda. “He deserves this title, as well as a location in the city to erect his statue,” Son Chhay wrote.
Chea Mony, who succeeded his brother at the union, said that he wrote to the king twice to suggest similar proposal. “The MP’s letter add more weight to our request If other MPs join him (Son Chhay) and support us, then my brother will obtain this title,” Chea Mony declared while adding that a request was also sent to the Phnom Penh city hall to obtain an authorization for a public gathering, organized by the FTUWKC, on 22 January, at the spot of the murder.
Two men were found guilty in the murder of Chea Vichea. However, several objections arose, including that of Chea Vichea’s family, to denounce the arrest of these two men, saying that the 2 charged, were not the real culprits.

It is clear who kill Chea Vichea. He got a text message. He gave it to the police. The police confirm a person of high position and a member of the Hun Sen circle. This is what he confessed in his tape just in case the threat carries through. Yet the system did not use this as evidence against conviction of the two currently held suspsects.
If they want to know, Heng Pov, the former PPenh police chief is still in custody. But they don't want him for any of that, they make sure he stay there because he have their state secrets.
It is a fact. Let us not forget the '97 coup, the '97 grenade attack, Piset Pilika, Om Rasady, Venerable Bunthoun, Chia Veacha, Touch Srey Nich. What does all of these have in common?
They each are connected to the inner circle of Hun Sen, they are nationalist who demand justice, fair wage, freedom from suppression and taught khmer cultures.
They are Khmer people with free conscious that live in a Big Brother country Cambodia.
A hero? that is a joke of the decade!!!
That is funny that people start to honor the dead rather than the living one.
If he is still alive, who cares even to recall his name.........

Are you you okay?
He was a hero when he was alive and he is a hero to those who he led now. You are false in you comment. You can see over ten thousand attended his funeral march when he died. So he was a respectable man and contribute greatly to those people's working condition.
By honoring those who die for working for the people, we are sending a strong message to those who commit these acts of murder.
You are kidding me .........
Asking the king permission ?????
This clown can not do anything , before he have a ok from ah kwak first.
Cambodia for sale!
Let's go ahead and sell our country to foreigners (just like the Russian sold Alaska to the U.S.).
Don't end up like the Russian. I guarantee you will regret it.
Don't repeat the history!
