Objectives of the Cambodian New Year Parade
LONG BEACH, CA - The New Year Parade committee maintains a strict policy of non-discrimination regarding participation in the parade. The parade's main objectives are to promote Cambodian culture, harmony among diverse local communities, area businesses and neighborhoods, and particularly Cambodia Town USA. Political slogans and election campaigns are strictly prohibited.
In reference to the democratically-elected and internationally recognized Cambodian government, we follow the official policy as defined by the U.S. Department of State. We believe past parades made positive impressions on participating Cambodian officials: they observed the joy and pride of the Long Beach Cambodian-Americans and the personal freedoms enjoyed by all citizens under the United States law.
Official Cambodian delegations participating in past parades and celebrations have included: H.E. Than Pok (Former-Secretary of State of Ministry of Education), H.E. Vora Kanthoul (Secretary of State of Ministry of Foreign Affairs), H.E. Sin Neung (Former-Parliament Member), H.E. Song Chhang (Former-Senator and current Advisor to the Royal Government), H.E. Sereywath Ek (Ambassador to USA), and H.E. Dr. Widhya Chem (Former-Ambassador to UN and current Ambassador to Germany). Also participated from the economic and nongovernmental sectors, Mr. Sokha Kem (Former-Director of NGO Center for Human Rights), and Representatives from Cambodian Rice Miller Association and Small and Medium Size Enterprises.
While we acknowledge the current Cambodian government is not perfect, we follow the example demonstrated by Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, promoting constructive dialogue and advocating change through peaceful means.
Regardless of the Cambodian government’s political party affiliation, we will continue to invite official Cambodian delegations to participate in the parade. We promote freedom, democracy, and free trade activity in Cambodia by presenting the best of the American value system in action.
We welcome all participants who believe in our objectives. We will not tolerate discrimination or harassment based on race, color, sex, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion or political affiliation. We also prohibit discrimination based on any other factor prohibited by federal, state or local law.

I plead to all Khmers in Long Beach, please don't this invitation take shape. This is not Cambodia. Don't let a few do what they want to do so that it only benefit them. If Khmers in Long Beach let this happen, there is no inspiration to the people in Cambodia to stand and fight for justice. They will loose all hope and strength to stand their ground because we can't stand up to a few in a country that allows us to stand our ground. sok an is youn and working for youn. I raised this issue about Khmer Unity in a similar post about Sok An's visit. Khmers abroad from Lowell, Long Beach, France, Australia, we know what democracy and freedom is because we have tasted and thrived upon the sweetness of liberty and democracy here in our host country. But in Cambodia people's opinions differ. Cambodia People's Party has won the hearts of the majority in Cambodia, they no longer listen to Sam Rainsy or FUNCINPEC. So those of you who oppose Hun Sen and the CPP of corruption and selling out to the Vietnamese, WHY NOT CREATE YOUR OWN POLITICAL PARTY and march to Cambodia with your beliefs? I assure you, you will not win the hearts of ordinary Cambodians because you no longer are an "ordinary" Cambodian living in Cambodia. So before you call me a traitor, think for a second how the ordinary Khmer living in Cambodia feels. You do not speak for Cambodia, the people of Cambodia have the right to choose.

Why do you want to create all these problems. Four years ago, you strongly defended April 17 as a good date for the parade. Then after a big protest from a lot of people, you changed it. But you still love it as your sacred date. Why do you do that?
Now again you defend your socalled "General invitation ???" to a "Deputy Prime Minister" of a goverment that is again protested and unlike by a lot of people.
What are trying to do?

It's hard for me to respond to your comment because I don't know how young you are. Now I assume that you are 18+.
Two points here need to be commented upon:
1- "Cambodian People's Party has won the hearts of the majority in Cambodia".
This is not perfectly true. You may refer to the election results particularly in 1998 and 2003. In the last 2 legislative mandates, the CPP has won the elections, of course. But it doesn't mean that the pro-Hanoi CPP has won the hearts of the majority of Khmer people. In fact, the former Khmer Rouge cadres have won the last 2 elections only through coercion, intimidation, vote buying, polls rigging and a lot of other tricks. If my list is not long enough, please do not forget to add the 4.5 million of Vietnamese illegally residing in Cambodia right now. Have they voted for other parties? Not one single ballot, my friend.
2- "The people of Cambodia have the right to choose".
If you fully understand what I've mentioned in no.1 right above, it's easy for you to understand my no.2 here. Financial dependency and/or pressure, coercion and intimidation start at the grassroots level, i.e. from Krom, Phoum, Khum, Sangkat, districts and provinces. Not one Cambodian soul can escape the CPP 24/7 strict surveillance and control. And you call that "the right to choose"? My friend, you must be joking.

I know Peter very well. I see him and talk with him almost everyday.
Peter's ultimate goal is to get position in the current Cambodian Government so that he can build his wealth. He used to tell me that he wants to bring Hun Sen but it just to obvious, so he waits and invite those people close to Hun Sen for the meantimes.

I think you both have a point. 6:30 may not have put it correctly but the majority of the rural population supports the CPP, whether out of ignorance, or because they really think the CPP is better than the SRP. Plus the CPP has more money to buy votes, which one hears is the current mode, rather than plain intimidation. The more sophisticated people in P. P. tend to be more critical. I personally believe that the CPP, even without any rigging going on, would win a majority, maybe not absolute. There isn't a whole lot overseas Khmer can do about it.

If my thinking about all of your comments is true, then vote the committee out of office. Put someone else in there that truely work for the common people of long beach.
Vietnam does not want any one group to come together and be powerful. It likes to divide groups up into little one so it can control them more easily.
Likewise, you never see our Cambodian community across the US to come together and have a collective voice. Divide and conquer, it has been working since time in memorial. Anybody said otherwise is your enemy. Watch out for that person.
So please kick the money and power hungry people out and bring it someone who truly would love to see Cambodian people move forward. He or she might be your friend, neighbor, and whom you know deep down in his/her heart that they are down for the struggle for the common good of the people.
It takes years to built Cambodian Town and it might take these now corrupt couples to bring it down. Don't let that happen. Stand for what is true.
The power of votes. Use them next time when you have the election. Learn from your lesson... Be cautious for who you will vote for... There are some people who disguise real good. We should take constructively to strengthen or divide the community. It will only make us stronger. What I don't understand is... Was there an approval by the board of Cambodian Town to invite Sok An? Or did Richer San/his folks did it without any kind of approval? The leaders of that community must work to serving the interest of that community? If they are no longer serving the interest of the community; they can be impeached by the board of directors before their term is over.
Spread the words.
Tell your friends or whoever you know about this situation.
Boycott all their activities.
Tell all organization that plan to join the parade about this. Let them know how you feel.
This is how to show them that they cannot do alone without the support of other people.
Let them do the parade alone this year.
I think you should let this SOK AN come to Cambodian town. WHY? On one condition... Have a town hall style meeting. There are a lot of questions he needs to answer.
And OR, when he is paraded on the street, everyone turn your back at him or have a float of Khmer rouge following him, along side the Communist-Vietnamese floats.
To all people who oppose this visit. I'm afraid you won't be able to physically help Cambodia (unless you come to terms with the ruling party of Cambodia). They use violence and intimidation, its true I too keep tabs in the news, but why fight them, when you can join them? Within every Khmer heart they yearn to help their nation and fight the Vietnamese oppressors. I am no agent or follower of the CPP, but here is a Khmer proverb: When entering a river, you must follow the rivers course, when entering a country you must respect that country's law. Nobody in Cambodia dares oppose the CPP because often opposition leads to civil war and revolution. Where were all of you when FUNCINPEC had power? Why didnt you all fight Hun Sen and his cronies when they were at war with FUNCINPEC? That was the best time, now it is too late. Cambodians believe that Hun Sen is leading Cambodia to the rightful path. Development is on the rise, and even gas and oil discoveries. I ask all of you to join the CPP so that you can go back to Cambodia, become businessmen and help Khmers. ON KI Media I have always read about Thai and Vietnamese companies taking land and building their own corporations. Its time that Khmers from America goto Cambodia and build their own BUSINESSES so that Cambodia will prosper from Khmers around the world and not by our greedy neighbors. If Peter and Richer see this as an opportunity to influence Sok An with United States democracy, then why wont he invite rights leader, opposition parties, labor unions too? Then the playing field would be level. I know many rich Khmers in Long Beach are Pro CPP. I know, I talk to many Khmer Business owners directly and ask indirectly because I am a usual customer. This is what one owner said to me at his Restaurant, "who ever is more powerful, you follow their lead because you don`t want problems". Many support the CPP`s for power and money period.

There are many differences between Khmers and its neighbors. At one time, Khmers only knew of honesty, integrity, charity, dignity, pride and patriotism. As foreigners move into the country, mainly Vietnamese and Chinese, they brought bad influences along such as: dishonesty, self-centered, corruption, greed, and crime. We are accustomed to these bad behaviors. We’ve become like them and lost our identity as Khmers. Each seconds we become greedy, unpatriotic and dishonest, we loose a little bit of our land and our soul. We have forgotten that we were an Empire; and the Empire was built on Khmer’s good qualities, not on bad qualities. Our land has become smaller and smaller, our people are suffering more and more because we allow a few individuals that with bad qualities to rise to power. As time goes by, these individual becomes iconic, example, and role model to a younger generation. However, people fail to realize that these bad behaviors only give benefits to a few and the rest of us are suffering. Now, it is time to put an end to those bad influences. It causes us so much. We need to stop these individuals from doing any more harm to Khmer. We have been giving in for so long and nothing good has come from it. The United States is a big and prosperous country not because it gave in to foreign power, but it stood up to foreigners and traitors. We have been complying with our neighbors, helping them in time of need and at the end they are our masters, they take our land, our people are hungry, and our freedom is lost. Sok An is working for Vietnamese’s agendas, which is to take our land. The individuals in Long Beach agenda is to become rich with connection to Sok An. If we let Sok An shows up in Long Beach it sends a message across the world that we as Khmers are weak. We are not warriors like our ancestors. We were an Empire because our ancestors were warriors. They have the courage and the strength to defend and concur. On the other hand, we lost that courage. We ran away to other country for safety, we become slave to foreigners; some of us do whatever it takes so that they can have money and power. As an end result, those individuals are not suffering, we are the only with tears and heartaches.
