VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam has the gross enrolment rate (GER) of 47 percent for pre-school aged children, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) revealed in its annual report 2007 on global education that was introduced at a seminar in Hanoi on January 17.
According to the report, Malaysia has the highest GER amongst East Asian countries with 108 percent (the figure exceeds 100 percent due to early or late entry in school) while Laos and Cambodia have the lowest rates, 8 and 9 percent, respectively.
According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training, more than 2.8 million children were sent to pre-primary schools in the 2005-06 school year.
The pre-school enrolment increased by 2.8 percent per year on average since the 2000-01 school year. The number of under-three children going to school increased by 3.8 percent per annum while that of above-three children raised by 2.4 percent.
The number of children enrolled in non-State schools sharply increased, representing 74.9 percent for under-three children and 55.2 percent for above-three children.
