6 prisoners escaped from dilapidated Ratanakiri jail

6 prisoners escaped the Ratanakiri provincial jail in the morning of 31 January 2008. The Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper reported that these prisoners escaped at around 1:00 AM during the night of 31 January, by punching a hole in the brick wall when the prison guards were careless. Ratanakiri provincial police indicated that, up until 02 February, the 6 prisoners who escaped have not been found yet. The 6 prisoners are all male, and they were charged with murders, drug trafficking and theft. The prosecutor of the Ratanakiri provincial court warned the careless guards who allowed the prisoners to escape, that they will be fined. The Ratanakiri provincial jail is located in Svay village, Labansiek commune, Banlung district. This prison is old and dilapidated.
