Activist: Disunity Could Doom Small Parties

Small parties allied against the ruling Cambodian People’s Party will be beaten in July’s election if they don’t stand together, a leading rights activist said Friday.

Thun Saray, president of the rights group Adhoc, said that divided parties will divide the votes, helping the CPP win parliamentary seats.

“If other non-CPP political parties cannot make an alliance to participate in the race on a one-on-one basis with the ruling CPP in the coming 2008 election, and if the CPP is able to keep its 47 percent [of parliamentary seats], as in the 2003 election, we will see the CPP get more than their current 73 parliamentarian seats,” Thun Saray said. “Because there were only two parties to receive the remaining seats in the previous election. But now there are four parties.”

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said Friday the statements put the CPP in an inaccurate adversarial light.

i think all smaller parties should unite with the big ones. i also think that there ought to be just two big parties to compete in the national election. actually, a handful of smaller independent parties should be allowed to exist as well. i think the srp party should be changed to a more national name instead of a founder's name. the two big parties i believe are, the cpp and srp, but srp should be changed to something more fit for cambodia like cambodian national party (cnp) whereas cpp stands for cambodian people party. these two parties ought to be equivalent to the republican party (in the USA) and the democratic party (in the USA), respectively. this is just an idea.

I won't be surprise at all about Khmer politic.

here's an idea: how about having just one big political party in cambodia, but select the premiership candidates from this one party to compete for this important position.

From history we learn that, in politics, Khmer don't know addition and multiplication, but substraction and division. If asked: Could the small parties (SRP,NRP,FUN,HRP etc...) be united ? I bet they might say they really want to in their lips, but not in their hearts. That's the " charit Khmer, or Khmer behavior." Pessimist? Sorry ! It's just the real situation and nobody can change that. "Why?" must be the biggest question that no one ever can give the answer. But I can try : Those people(leaders???) always want to change things around but never want to change themselves. They rather let themselves get beaten, over and over and over and than go around lie to the poor Khmer people...again.. of their excuses why they didn't win the elections.

I agree with Mr Thun Saray comment. Come on all opposition parties should reunite under one ticket " United party logo ". If they unite together, the prospect of Cambodia survival will be in Cambodian hand. They must discuss to each other for a big " unite party" instead of many smaller parties. I agree also with Mr Mam Sonando that if people are working for a common purpose of National interest, then they can work together to win the election. But if they are working for their own interest, they will sacrify their interest at all. Areak Prey

AH HUN SEN will not live forever! Cambodian politic will remain the same for many more years to come as long as AH HUN SEN continue to stay in power because everything now is dictated by economic interest not democratic value or human right issue!

The Vietcong government can always pump more illegal Vietnamese immigrants to Cambodia to shore up AH HUN SEN power in any election! And with all the gloom and doom prediction going on right now for Cambodia and it would be better off if Cambodian people don't have a nation at all because having a nation come with many responsibility and headache to protect Cambodia and Cambodian people interest! And so far, AH HUN SEN doesn't give a fuck about Cambodian people interest and Cambodian population still continue to vote for him but in reality it is the illegal Vietcong population who continue to vote for him to stay in power!

Oh well! Cambodia is a dying nation and what is the fucken point of rescuing a dying nation and rescuing to do what? You can say that Cambodian people have to nobody to blame except themselves and their stupid leaders! So what is the solution? The solution is to let Cambodian political system evolve on its own according to the law of nature and sit back and relax and this is probably the best way for stupid Cambodian people and stupid Cambodian leaders to learn what is good for them!

International community had been applying political pressure and give hundred of million of dollars as incentive for the Cambodian leaders to change their behavior but none seems to be working at the moment and it is about time to call a quit and let Cambodia die according to the law of nature!

I agreed that to combine together to make yourself strong, but if you combine with someone who is different and always cheats over you, what's the point to include him in your group.

Let me point straight, N. Ranarith has no national interest; rather stay on your own better than let him in to destroy yourself.

Build up yourself to make sure you are strong enough to be the winner.

If you are not strong enough, but you can become a winner and let somebody rule over your head and bossing you around, what's the point.

NO REAL CHANGE, NO REAL LIBERATION, NO REAL PEACE AND NO REAL INDEPENDANT.

Just a fake winner and a puppet.

DEA TE KNOCH DOCH TE KNEA, GO TO HELL!

this is called living in reality. let reality dictates the situation in cambodia. this is how nature supposed to rejuvenate. learn from nature as cambodia can not afford instability.
