Hun Sen's reminder: Cambodia needs $500 million to build the railroad line between Cambodia and Vietnam

$500 million needed to link Cambodia to Vietnam?
Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen speaks at the ground breaking ceremony of a new railway at Serey Sophon town in Banthey Meachey province, 469km (291 miles) northwest of Phnom Penh, February 18, 2008. Cambodia launched on Monday a $73 million project for the restoration and reconstruction of over 600 km of railway track which will become part of the rail transportation route linking Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam to Kunming, China. On Monday morning, the authorities have officially inaugurated the restoration site for a railroad line. The restoration will involve 552 km of railway, and will cost $73 million. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), OPEC, Malaysia, and the Cambodian government will finance this ambitious project.

Seriously damaged by the civil war, railways in the kingdom will find a new youth. On Monday 18 February, in the province of Banteay Meanchey, the government has officially proceeded to the launch of the restoration work for a portion of the network, covering a distance of 552 km. These railways will connect Phnom Penh to Poipet (386 km) and Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville (266 km). The restoration of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville line will take 23 months, whereas the Phnom Penh-Poipet line will take 22 months.

The total cost will be $73 million. The Cambodian government will finance $15.2 million, the ADB $42 million, OPEC $13 million, and Malaysia $2.8 million. Haruhiko Kuroda, ADB president, is satisfied about this project: “This even shows the importance of the government policy for the return to prosperity in the kingdom.”

The Australian company Toll Holding obtained a 32-year concession for the railway network in Cambodia [KI-Media: Could this explain the presence of Kith Meng at the inauguration?]. A French-Belgium-Thai consortium will take care of the restoration project. The authorities hope that these improvements will lead to development of the transport of goods.

“The railways play an important role in the trade between our country and Thailand. They are of main importance as part of the trans-border railroad system,” Sun Chanthol, the minister of public works and transport, explained. This line will link, in 2015, Singapore to Kunming in China, crossing Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma and Laos. Hun Sen took care to remind during the inauguration that: “$500 million is needed to build the railway line between Cambodia and Vietnam.”

Excellent move made by Prime Minister Hun Sen taking initiative to reconstruct the war torn rail way that has left from its predecessors. Infrastructures in Cambodia must be rebuilt regardless, but Samdech has chosen the right time to deliver what he has promised to the people of Cambodia. I am happy to see good things are beginning to head in the right directions.

I thank you.

Well begging for money that will be use to build your country is the best thing you can do when the country is not really producing any money. But it depends on what you do with it. Corruption is horrible. Making sure that jobs are created is the best thing the country needs. Building a railway at that price is redicoulous. Money will be better spent on creating jobs not making more jobs for existing workforce.

professional beggers and professional thieves (corruption). This is the way of the cambodian people as perceived in foreign countries. That 's why the thai, korean, viet they laugh at us and just sit on our head....
That's what we get for being stupid and vote for the same stupid people....It is not surpirsing, considering that Pol Pot killed 95% of educated people, and the rest they flees to foreign countries. Then who are the people who stay in Cambodia?!!!!

Cambodia boast that its cheaper there, but what i don't understand is, why does it cost millions to build, construct, repair, etc....anything?

It seems so expensive, or does it mean that Cambodia is now caught up with the rest of the world economy? Please explain Mr. Hun Sen.

Toll Holding obtained a 32-year concession for the railway network in Cambodia

The company [listed company on stock market] has a good track record on their business [seaport, logistic, high way].

Existing infrastructure shall be restored, rebuilt, upgrade and if possible build more not just for now but for the future.

He begs for money from the US to build his and his disciple pockets more than to build Cambodia.

If I were AH HUN SEN I would use $500 million dollars to go to the moon so Cambodian people can have their national pride! If what I said is too extreme and maybe the $500 million can be used to build roads and superhighways to connect every part of Cambodian province first to promote population and economic distribution throughout Cambodia because there are some parts of Cambodia that are highly densely populated and some parts of Cambodia are very isolated where Cambodian people don't even know how to speak Khmer language all!

For now I don't see the urge or the reason that Cambodia should be spending with such astronomical money figure which there is no guarantee on the return investment!

AH HUN SEN government has an obligation explain the Cambodian population on the return of $500 million investment with this Vietcong project!
