The Cambodia Union Federation (CUF) asked the ministry of labor to issue orders to Karaoke shop owners to provide days off for Karaoke workers. According to The Mekong Times, Rong Chhun, President of the CUF, raised this issue in a letter dated 19 February sent to Vong Sot, the minister of labor. Rong Chhun said that almost all the Karaoke shop owners do not respect the labor law, and they violate the freedom and the work agreements for Karaoke workers also. Rong Chhun said that Karaoke workers earned low salary, between $40-50 per month, and they never receive overtime pay for working on holydays, to the contrary, these workers saw a pay cut of $2 dollar per day if they take a day off with authorization, and $5 cut if they take a day off on holydays. Rong Chhun said that shop owners should not cut the workers salary if they take a day off with prior authorization, and they should cut a small amount only if the workers take a day off without authorization. Oum Mean, the under secretary of state of the ministry of labor, said that his department just received the request, and that it is still thinking about it.
