Translated from Khmer by Socheata

During a recent interview given to the Kampuchea Thmei newspaper about whether the royals should pursue politics or not, Prince Sisowath Thomico said that, in his opinion, the royals should pursue their political life based on whatever mean and method these royals see fit. The prince added: “We know that a royal has the duty to serve the people, if the royals want to continue pursing politics, they should be allowed to participate openly.” However, for himself inside the Funcinpec party, the prince said that he will not present his parliamentary candidacy in any of the provinces. Even though he does not present his candidacy to the parliament, or to any position, the prince said that he still pities and loves his nation, and he will still continue to provide good ideas to our national political leaders in order to develop and bring progress to our nation in the future.

To Mr. Thomico,

Politic is not for everyone and maybe the Royal families are not borned to interact with politics. Politics require alot of understanding about rules of law and certainly those who want to interact with public policies must have a strong Code of Ethics to avoid and easily bought by fames and power.

Royals are also human therefore, they are susceptible in living of the life style of the Rich and Famous, thus they can be easily bought as we have seen in the past, infact, it happens in this present time.

Thank You

ironically, the field of studies call sociology mentioned that the best form of stable, prosperous, powerful gov't in the world is lead by a royalty, called 'absolute monarchy'. this is the best form of gov't, believe it or not, and many experts in the field would agree. however, the problem with this is getting everyone to agree to it. plus, in this day and age, it seems impossible to have this form of gov't anymore, given the freedom and capitalism that the world need. not to mention that, the world's hunger for changes and modernization. i guess if one wants to make this kind of gov't possible, then, the world has to stay the same forever, then we don't need to compete with one another, etc... oh my, the good old days; now it's only a dream! but the reality is, the world doesn't run like that everymore. so we (cambodia) has to flow along with the rest of the world and be like the rest of the world. this is a strange idea, but true. study sociology and everyone will see what i mean (education does not stop until one passes away).

because of how the world operates in this day and age, royalty in any society gets no respect, especially when they get involved in politics. to understand this, then one has to really understand the term 'politics' in itself. a brief note: poitics (in the own words) is about different personal opinion; it requires disagreement, dialogue, bickering, etc; and when a personal of great respect enters in politics, they may lose all their rights (as a royal person). this is what they have to sacrafice if they want to get involved in politics. they have their choice, though, stay out of politics or stay in politics, but they have to pick one and understand that they will not get all of the respect they entitle to as a royal person. please remember, world runs differently than in the old, old, old days. thank you.

oh, and the other problem with 'absolute monarchy' is that there will always be chaos when the ruler died (because no one can live forever). so absolute monarchy would need a lot of reforms before people even think about voting for this kind of gov't.

ps: in a democracy society, we can talk about everything without fear of loss of life.

in this case, "reforms" is the magic word.
