McCain Statement on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's Threats Against Democtratic Opposition

Today Senator McCain issued the following statement on the situation in Cambodia:

“I am deeply concerned by reports that Prime Minister Hun Sen has stepped up threats against Cambodia’s democratic opposition. Hun Sen has engaged in intimidating rhetoric, including a far-fetched allegation that Sam Rainsy Party members are organizing an armed insurgency designed to topple the government. The Prime Minister’s highly inflammatory remarks are inconsistent with the government’s obligation to ensure the safety and security of the Cambodian people.

“Today over 20 Sam Rainsy Party members are in hiding, fearful of Hun Sen’s threats. Sam Rainsy himself, who currently is visiting the United States, has solid reason to fear for his safety upon his return to Cambodia.

“The threats against the democratic opposition, coupled with Hun Sen’s disregard for Cambodia’s constitution, are deeply troubling. They seriously endanger Cambodia’s already fragile democracy and bode ill for the country’s future.

“Friends of Cambodia expect the Prime Minister to respect Cambodia’s constitution and the right of the political opposition to voice their opinions freely and to participate in peaceful political activities. We are watching this situation closely, and strongly urge Hun Sen to retract his rhetorical attacks. As both the head of government and as the instigator of this new round of intimidation, Hun Sen will be accountable for the safety of opposition leaders and party members. Threats against the opposition are unacceptable, to Cambodians and to their friends around the world.”

McCain Statement on Reports of Parliamentary Action Against Sam Rainsy Party in Cambodia

Senator John McCain released the following statement on the current political situation in Cambodia:

I am deeply concerned by reports that the Cambodian parliament may soon strip Sam Rainsy and two other SRP members of their parliamentary immunity. This would open the way for the Cambodian government to initiate politically-motivated criminal action against Sam Rainsy and his allies.

Such a plan runs counter to the basic principles of democracy. I will be following this situation closely, and I urge the members of the Cambodian Peoples Party and FUNCINPEC to respect the right of the political opposition to participate in peaceful political activities.

If this plan to strip the SRP parliamentarians of their immunity is carried out, I fear that it will have dire implications for the U.S.-Cambodia relationship. Prime Minister Hun Sen and members of the coalition government bear responsibility for ensuring the freedom of citizens to express their views without fear of reprisal.

For goodness sake, stop dragging up old news stories and passing them off as current news. your anti-CPP/Hun Sen/Vietnamese rhetoric is extremely tiresome and does KI Media a massive disservice as a news gatherer. In fact I am so tired of it all, I will no longer be visiting your website and will urge others not to visit either.

Hey all,

If one doesn't like this website, why you go to the website? just go and look at the other website. But, this photo of Mc Cain with Sam Rainsy makes me change my vote. I initially want to vote for Hillary. I always voted for Democratic candidate in the past even I registered to vote for republican. This time I might vote for John Mc Cain. Some of you circulate the email to vote for Obama, but I disagree. American is not ready for black president yet, but only a hand fool of white people support him including Ted Kennedy and his family. Whoever elected people who support will lost their seat in the next election. Black people in Ameica help each other at the work place. If one does a bad job, they will protect each other. That's why Obama wins most of the election in the South. Obama knows how to talk, but less experience in every field.

If you don't want to vote for republican, go to vote for Hillary Clinton.

i think people shouldn't be fearful of the gov't if they do something right. please take a look, these few individuals might be what we called extremist, radical people who are unrealistic in their demand from gov't and who wanted anything and everything and if they don't get their way, then they cry wolf and disturb society. these few individuals are too much to handle sometimes. why can't they be constructive in their criticism. why do they have to use cursing words, swearing words, name-calling words, etc. they would pick the worse condition and blown it out of proportion to take it look like the gov't is irresponsible to the people. FBI, please investigate any allegation these individuals made about the gov't before being so gullible because they can be trouble makers; they're not being helpful. maybe everyone just have different approaches to doing thing, but doesn't mean they are irresponsible. why can't they be civilized? got to analyze both sides of the story before coming up with a solution to solve problems or crises.

it is obviously political bickering, here. i thought cambodia supposed to have freedom of political affiliation as well. haven't everyone forgotten already? cambodian people are free to choose which political party they see could be a better leader, a leader that can unite the people, a leader that get involved with the people down to the grass-root, a leader who cares about the welfare of the people, the economic well-being of the people, etc... a leader who show self-interest, special interest, who is irresponsible should be impeach and voted out of office. everyone should be aware that this is a new cambodia, not the old cambodia like the past years who often lost land to the neighboring countries, and the past, ignorant ways who didn't really care for the people, only for their family, friends, and those who supported them. this is a new cambodia, please remember this, a new cambodia now where changes and development is inevitable; a new cambodia where people from all walks of life is hungered for changes so their children the future of cambodia, their beloved country, can be a better place for them to live, enjoy, do business, etc., etc...!!!!!! remember, without the people no one can be in power. power to the cambodian people who, in my opinion, have suffered too long and enough already!

i sure would like to hear a national debate between the candidates who wanted to run for the prime minister position in cambodia. this way, cambodia people can decide for themselves when they hear what each one is planning for cambodia. why not do it the american way - debates, debates, debates, and more debates... have all media get involed with discussions. nothing is more powerful than the human humiliation. if someone want to run for this important position in the gov't, then they ought to be willing to be in front of national television to talk and tell the nation what they will do for cambodia and its people. this is a real democracy and all party ought to do this for the new cambodia. make it a requirement for this position; if people are not willing to do this, then they won't be qualified for this position of prime ministership. and the usa, japan, china, the eu, australia, etc should make this a requirement as a condition for their annual financial aid to the cambodian gov't. these rich and powerful nations should demand that cambodia do this for the position of prime minister; otherwise, the political bickering, at a personal level will never stop. these countries have the power to demand this from the cambodia gov't. haven't the cambodians suffered enough already? USA, EU, Japan, Australia, China, please demand this from the cambodia gov't to set elect a prime ministerial position this way, once and for all. i'm for it! this is called constructive criticism. give more ideas, everyone, get involved in cambodian gov't.

Rainsy should be fearful when he enters Cambodia because he constantly incites and curses at the CPP. Remember when he asked MaCain to stop donating money to Cambodia because he did not benefit from it?

Yes, it is true that this website is one-sided...more like a sam rainsy supporter and hates everything about CPP. Still can't believe with all the profenities used here. Let me use it, too. one fucked-media site...

4:35 AM

The Americans are divided right now: Will it be McCain [former POW during the Vietnam War] or Clinton [former 1st lady or will it be the 1st Female President in USA history] or Obama [the 1st color President]. There is no clear cut winning between Obama and Clinton [from the same party].

Who ever will come out on top in November, just put fingers crosses and hope that he/she is not President of the world. We have enough of G W Bush administration right now regarding their foreign policies.

I'd love to vote for McCain to make Rainsy feel good. But i seriously feel that no matter who is the US President, the Cambodian situation is not going to change much because of strong China influence in addition to major investments from Asian countries like Korea.

For the future of the US, Obama is the best candidate for President. Why?
He has a diverse background, smart, and listening. His background and his mentality toward peace make him the best world embassador for peace. His muslim ancestor and his childhood memories of living in Indonesia makes him a person of deep understanding of people from different parts of the world. And in return he will be well respected in international arena.

I'm not gonna vote in general election if Hillary is the dem candidate, and McCain is a NO NO. But I still love U McCain.

i think all khmers are for democracy in cambodia. but the personal attack on any one individual is something else, like cursing, swearing, name-calling, etc., ought not be tolerated.

Let's make prediction who going to be the US President of United State in the future.
1.McCain
2.Hillary
3.Obama
I believe Mr.Obama going to be the President of United State in the future.

I was an independent voter and I voted for Mrs. Clinton because I believe Mrs. Clinton has more experience in politic than Mr. Obama and beside she has a husband who is a former president to back her up in any event!

I believe President Bill Clinton didn't do a bad job either except some personal scandal.

My mind probably will change on November if Mr. McCain can declare where he is standing on political issues.

So far I like Mrs. Clinton because she dares to take a stand on political issues.
And I can't wait to see her debating with Mr. McCain.

Oh by the way, Mr. Obama ran the political platform base on “change” and he want to change to what when his political endorsement came from old timer politicians.
