Recently I was on a bus trip from Prey Nakor (Ho Chi Minh City) to Preah Trapeng (Tra Vinh). As an experienced traveler, I often travel alone. Being squashed between two guys, the man to my right, Vu is a smartly dressed with a baby faced declared himself to be 28 years old.
The other man to my left, Duc appears to be at about the same age with stylish hair and a never ending grin on his face. Half way through the four hours journey, the conversation got started. Without revealing to them that I'm Khmer, I sat there mostly listening and occasionally join in the conversation when question is directed to me. For the next two hours gave me a surprising insight into the perception of Vietnamese on Khmer.
Vu said he has been doing business in Cambodia and often travel to Thailand. At first when arriving in Cambodia he said he was scared to be revealed as Vietnamese because he was told that Khmer does not like Vietnamese. Curious on why that is the case, his Thai friend have told him that Khmer are fearful that Vietnamese will steal their land. At this point I said "Yes, that's exactly right".
With some knowledge of history, Vu describe how Vietnam territory used to be only from current day Nha Trang northwards and have subsequently invaded Champa and Kampuchea. He credited this victory to Tran Hung Dao (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tran_Hung_Dao) and subsequent Vietnamese rulers for literally "chopping off (Khmer) necks".
Beside other trash talks, calling Khmer as Miên every single time, and the expected as to how Vietnam is better than Cambodia – one thing he said that's true is the level of corruptions - he told us one policeman can work and feed the whole family comfortably from the money he collected. Vu described how one day when he was talking to his friend (in Vietnamese) on the street of Phnom Penh, a police officer approached them and introduced himself – the policeman is a Vietnamese who had come to Cambodia gave him a lot of insights into Cambodian.
Duc, who has also been talking a lot too, but not about Cambodia but about China because he visited China recently – he said hotels room in China smells bad and had triggered Vu to say hotel room in Cambodia smells bad too, plus Khmer house also smells bad. I was trying to ask why that is, they said maybe in Cambodia they burn a lot of incenses!?
As to be expected in man's conversation, there has to be talk about women. Duc said Khmer woman have pretty face and Vu added that's true as they have the face of the Indian. But for Khmer guys, Vu said they are very attracted to Vietnamese woman.
As our journey coming to an end we drove pass the many beautiful Khmer temples. I was thinking to myself, thank goodness I'm nearly home. Although I didn't like many of what Vu has said, I was thankful that he told his other Vietnamese friends that they are thieves who stole our land and murdered our people.
Our people in Kampuchea-Krom are living in poverty with no ending in sights. I was told that when Khmer Krom overseas makes noises, the Vietnamese government actually listens and took action to reduce restrictions on them. But this is very small steps and more needed to be done.
I hope you will come to visit Kampuchea-Krom and help our people anyway you can. When you are here, be alert but do not be alarmed. Kampuchea-Krom is our home.

I've got teary eyes whenever I read stories like this about our people. Khmer Krom, "Khmer Kandal" and "Khmer Loeur", we are all Khmer! We need to be united and learn to put aside our differences and work together for the common causes, heed the plight of our people and our homeland. If we can only find great leaders who can truely lead, have vision and are willing to sacrifice his/her personal or family gain for the good of our people and our country...Perhaps it's a wishful thinking, and most likely it's not going to happen within my life time but I do hope that the next Khmer generation will produce such leadership!
I was born as Khmer and will die proudly and happily as Khmer!
Thank you very much this story!
It's such a very touching, insightful anecdote!
Your story had touched my heart.

Cheers,

POLICE FORCES AND ARMED FORCES IN PHNOM PENH ARE INFILTRATED BY THE VIETNAMESE ALREADY SINCE SEVERAL YEARS. THAT'S HOW THE GOVERNMENT SUCCEED TO KCIK OUR MONKS. CAMBODIA IS ALREADY COLONIZED BY VIETS, CHINESES AND KOREANS!!!! THE DESTINIY OF THE KHMER PEOPLE IS TO BE THEIR SLAVES. THAT 'S WHAT WE DESERVE FOR DISPUTING EACH OTHER WITHOUT ANY KIND OF PATRIOTISM SPIRIT AS THE THAI!!!!

This is why Cambodians can never depend on the police to solve crimes of murdered Khmers. They dont care since its not their own kind, and they are more than happy to see us get killed off anyway. It makes a lot of sence that the Police force in Cambodia are always stepping on the Khmer and even go so low and beat Khmer Krom monks. No wonder a lot of them have no respect, because a lot of them are Vietnamese.
Excellence story. I apeal to every Khmers to tolorant each other and united our Nation. We have to learn the lessions from other countries, why they are rich and powerfull. I agreed that first thing to do is Good Governance by takling the corruption, strengthening the immigration law by send VN back to their country, promote Khmer culture. I maybe wrong but I am not affriad of VN invade us if I was a leader I will make a Khmer revolusion then absorb VN. Thus, VN will became a Khmer. Good lession learn from US, immigrant help US economy peak the top.
Indpendent Economist,
I am very happy to see comments or letters like this to wake up all our borthers. We are all Khmer, regardless in Cambodia, Khmer Krom, Khmer in Thai we all should be united to solve national interests. I hope one day Khmer Krom will be East Timore, Kosovo. Kosovo is getting one step of getting independent now. Khmer Krom, if we can't join with Khmer Kandal at least we can form our own country if time can't let us join with Cambodia. The reason I'm saying like this because Kosovo can't join Albania. Kosovo was part of Albania. Anyway, getting indpendent or not joining Cambodia is not a big deal. At least we are free from Vietnam though. I hope want day this day comes. I think pretty soon. Cause right now in vietnam they have sensitive issue to deal with. Khmer Krom all the way!
There will be an indpendent of Khmer Kampuchea Krom in near future. They had already set up government to take place when thing changes. Just like the government of IRAQ. IRAQ had set up government in exile before they went in. Now they in control of IRAQ. Khmer Krom alreaddy the same. We have all of provices governor and law people to take place. In the other hands our KHmer Krom people will ask the THAI to help us training too. A lot of Khmer Krom monks in Thai land now.
I am khmer, I love all my people and my Country. Regardless in Kindom of Cambodia,Khmer krom and khmer in Thailand,Only one thing i want to ask to all old generation to tell young generation not talk bad about your own Country and your people,It's make me very angry and very sad.
Thank you!!!,May God bless all people in the world and give PEACE all nations.
The Vietnamese agents infiltrate into Khmer police and arm force because Hun Sen let them join. He only serves Hanoi interest, not Khmer interest. Ong Teur is the one behind this agents. This guy is still in Cambodia and now he is in charge of Cambodia National Election.
I hope Khmer krom people will stand up and revolve against Hanoi regime. Let's kick out Youn Hanoi from Srok Khmer by killing them one by one in the provinces to make them going back to their home.
Look at Albania Kosovo will declare independence from Serbia tomorrow Friday February 15 2008. It will be Khmer Krom turn to declare independence from Hanoi aggression. Hanoi illegally stole Khmer Krom land in 1945. Khmer Krom need to sue the French who ceded this land to Hanoi illegally.
11:29 YOU SOUND SO GOOD! I do not want to pick on you but your confused words just make young Cambodian confused if they read your commend!
What is talking bad about your country and people?
No Khmer would do that only the Youn who live in Cambodia would do that! And the stupid slaves like Tep Vong and Hun Xen (CPP) people and they not only say bad but do verry bad thing like killing and send our respecfull monk to the Evil Vietnamese prison !
Vote CPP out to let the world know that we hate the STUPID BLIND REGIME of CPP! If Hun Xen lost in the big town that have international inspectors that is verry good fo international community to understand our problem and wish!
CUT the tell of the Evil's Dog CPP!, people!!!!!!!
I am 11:29 pm,Some young generation not all of tnem Mr.2:22 AM,Because most of them not born inside the kingdom of Cambodia. Some of them need help to tell about the History of our Homeland,I know one person need help ,His name's :first Bi and His last name's Kim .(BI KIM)

good story, thanks for sharing it with us,here. i know, one can learn a lot by allowing the other person to talk. i'm glad this khmer krom person is so smart to be inquisitive about what other know or say about cambodia and her people.
be proud of who you are and continue to preserve our khmer identity in kampuchea krom. learn more about khmer history. it's ok to be bilingual in khmer and youn. never forget who you are. goo job. god bless khmer people.
Thank you for sharing the story. This is a very touching one. It seems that our brothers who live in Khmer-kampuchea Krom are facing a lot of bloodshit problems. It have learned the life of our brothers through an uncle who came to work for me in Phnom Penh. He later brought his whole family to live in Cambodia. He said he had relatives in Pusat Province. I like him alot. he works very hard. When he had some free time from work he told me about Kampuchea Krom. He said in 1972, there was a plan revolution that would erupt at 3 a.m., but unfortunately there were some betryals in the squad that caused the revolution fail. Then there were alot of our brothers died as consequences. He talked about the Vietnamese Gvt. totured and murdered, and executed those who stood up for their freedom. My tears dropped when I heard that, so did he. He looked very sad. It is too sad to talk about it. He had worked for me for almost two years. he stayed and ate with me. He brought his fellows and his son to Phnom Penh.I tried to find jobs for them, then i had some foreign friends who need workers to renovate their home. I also tried to teach his son English. Then (1997-98)I was a teacher of one small English school in P.P. That uncle is a very honest person, i normally consider him as one of my relatives. He usually came to me when he needed help. I always did. Anyway, when I asked him to go back to Kampuchea Krom, he said he was afraid that Viet GVt. would put him in jail. I believed him because when I read news about our brothers, not all, ended up in jail.
Now his son can speak English, and he works for an NGOs, I guess, when I met him the last time. I don't know what happens to him now because we have never seen each other for such a long time.
Anyway, I hope Kampuchea Krom will be libereted soon as East Timore, or Kosovo. That uncle (his isn't too old, but i like to call him that way) used to talk about East Timore as well. He used to be a monk for quite sometime as he told me.
Thank you. I love you all!
