Cambodian opposition leader calls for new FBI probe into bombing

Cambodian opposition leader Sam Rainsy addresses people in front of a stupa during the 11th anniversary of the March 30,1997 grenade attacks in Phnom Penh. Rainsy called for the US FBI to renew its probe into the grenade attack that killed at least 16 people.

Cambodia's opposition leader Sam Rainsy called Sunday for the US Federal Bureau of Investigation to renew its probe into a grenade attack that killed at least 16 people more than a decade ago.

Sam Rainsy addressed supporters outside Cambodia's parliament, where exactly 11 years ago four grenades were hurled into a crowd of anti-government protesters, wounding at least 120 people including a US citizen.

Despite the government's insistence that the case is still open, no one has been arrested in connection with the bloody attack.

"I not only appeal to the FBI to renew their investigation but also appeal to the FBI to reveal the result of their past investigations," he said.

"Eleven years have passed... but the truth has not yet been shown."

The FBI opened a probe into the attack after US citizen Ron Abney -- who was country director of the US-funded group the International Republican Institute at the time -- was seriously wounded by shrapnel.

But the investigation was hampered by uncooperative Cambodian government officials and became quickly bogged down.

In a statement read out at Sunday's gathering, Abney echoed calls for a thorough investigation.

"Every year we call on the Cambodian government to investigate," he said.

Human rights groups have accused Prime Minister Hun Sen's bodyguards of throwing the grenades -- a charge repeatedly denied by the premier.

New York-based Human Rights Watch on Sunday also urged the FBI to reveal what it said was "damning evidence" about Hun Sen's connection to the bombing.

"Instead of trying to protect US relations with Cambodia, it should now finish what it started," said Brad Adams, the group's Asia director.

Sam Rainsy also used to accuse Hun Sen of masterminding of the attack, but later recanted after his return in 2006 from self-imposed exile in France, where he had fled to avoid being imprisoned for defaming the premier.

The US, whether under the Democrat or Republican president, has not released the FBI report. Perhaps they are not convinced that the opposition party is not strong enough to benefit from dire consequences. Or they do not believe the SRP deserves the benefit of the release.

It is disgeartened to see people with healthy sight can't see how heinous Hun Sen and clique.

Also sad some conscionable members of CPP standing committee took no action to correct the abuse perpetuated by Hun clique.

It is CPP has division in view, there are Hun Sen's Pol Potist branch, Sar Kheng Ke Kim Yan branch, and Hanoi branch.

FUNCINPEC lost vision and aspired to division in own house. The dilemma that Hun Sen has FUNCINPEC in boxer short pocket,so the rest were nothing to Hun Sen.

Ranridh made fatal errors in detracting Raingsy from challenging Hun Sen.Now all are to be crushed by Hun Sen new security forces imported from Viet Nam before July 2008.

Hold tight,Tea Banh is giving in because he was threatened to be replaced by Hun Sen own son. Patirotic not,Tea Banh first needs to save his neck before Hoc Londi assassins are released to shoot to kill in next July election.Tea Banh was afraid to ask Ke Kim Yan who is quietly earning respect from foreign embassies.

Hun Sen not CPP in next July will use Viet gun barrels to intimidate voters. After Pol Pot,there is Sihanouk and now Hun Sen.

Kem Sokha, former Human Rights activist once said, vote your life away or vote to live...Ciorculate petition to UN human roghts to reinvestigate Hun Sen bloody hands in mass murder on March 30,...

I do not believe the Hoover's boys' supervisor would approve the inquest into the alleged incident. Further, I think Mr. Tan would be hard-pressed to cogently convince his boss in the DC on the subject matter.

Mr. Tan, you're so furtunate for the Cambodia assignment, whereas I have a few friends who were assigned to New York and LA, and with the G-man (FBI agent) salary, they have very diffucult to afford even the one-bed room (e.g.; NY & LA). Again, I think you're so lucky.

Again, congratulations on the establishment of the DOJ office in Phnom Penh.

Ah gorillas out!

3:39pm, you wrote "why should US care?", "this is not a US crime". Every human being should have every god given rights to voice their opinions without being fear of retrebution. An American citizens was injured during the grenade attack. Therefore, give the FBI probable cause to investigate. While you sit in the comfort of your home bitching...... Others like Sam Rainsy and his supporter's risk their lives tried to make Cambodia a better place.
You, on the other hand forget the sacrifices that these people made.

HEY ALL, please see how politicians use victims' suffering and death for their political agenda. It's good that they care about people. And hope we will see more suffering...

I- CPP uses 7 January and the suffing from Khmer Rouge time

2- SRP uses 30 March tragedy

3- Funcinpec and RNP share 6,7 July coup

4- What HRP and the rest? Use their own suffering?

The answer is that they are trying to search for the tragerdy. But please don't drive people to die and use their suffering!!!!

Ohhh ... poorrrr bayyyyy beeeee ... the American was injured in the blast.

What do you expect from an unstable country, 11:53?

You put yourself in the war zone, and your luck will run out soon or later, get it?

Cambodian opposition leader calls for new FBI probe into bombing.

Title shall have been written as Cambodia opposition leader calls for new FBI probe into grenade attack instead of bombing [there's no bomb dropped the bom on that particular day].

Anonymous said...

A decade went by, the victim families still wait in vain for the answer. There is no lead or not even a mere suspect in this incident. Why? How can one expect to find out whom is responsible for the grenade attack when the perpetrators itself is the one whose sole responsibility is to investigates the crime. The FBI can unraveled this, but at the same times the truth can back fire. With the power that he (PM) is obligated to have, he can shut down the FBI Field Office at any given time. After all, he is the law of the country.

Again, the Hoover's boy's boss in DC will never approved the inquest into the alleged incident, because it simply squander their time, money and energy.

4:52, not all crimes are solvable, and that is why we called it unsolvable crime.

In any case, at least we know who's responsible for getting thirteen years old killed. Isn't that so?

Anonymous said...

3:57am, don't pity me! I was just trying to explained why the FBI should have a jurisdictions over the grenade attack because a citizens of the US is involved. Unlike your country, who doesn't give a damn about the right of the people, we American will prosecute any evil doers who attempted to harm a US citizens any where on the globe. In America, there's a place to protest and exercise your freedom of speech. You on the other hand called it a war zone. ^j^

Anonymous said...

Again, don't expect for this case to be solved (without the assistance of the FBI) because the perpetrators is also the investigators. There is no such things as a suspect in the Hun Sen vocabulary. All these crimes is committed by your PM, that's why it's unsolvable!! ^j^

9:34, American have no right to protest in Cambodia. That is interfering with our internal affair, get it?

And 9:49, who ever stop FBI or CIA from investigating anything? You know fair well, they will do it on their own free will if they wanted to. Do you think Saddam stopped CIA from investigating Iraq? Give us a break, will ya?

Anonymous said...

11:57AM not thing can stop CIA you better to read more what is CIA!

Don't wash your father's looting money!

Anonymous said...

Why do I have to read shit. Can I just learn it from you, buddy. What the hell are we here for? Duh!

Anonymous said...

1:14 am, no one said that the American's were there to protest. How do you know that they weren't there to observed and report? Your internal affair? Then perhaps, you can explained to me why on earth is an FBI field office is doing in Cambodia? You got it all wrong! American's couldn't careless about your internal affair. They're only there for two reasons; counter-intelligence against terrorist threat and hunting down a pedophiler. I say again when a US citizen get's hurt, it's no longer your internal affair's. FYI, it was the UN that investiated Iraq for WMD, NOT the FBI nor the CIA. Get it!
