The number of people dead from traffic accidents, especially among the youths, is increasing significantly all over the country. Last week’s report by Handicap International indicated that at least 125 people died, and 576 were injured in the country during December 2007. This number shows an increase of 32% when compared to the same period in 2006. On Thursday, Hun Sen declared that traffic accident is the second killer in Cambodia, following AIDS. Sem Panhavuth, Handicap International spokesman, told VOA that 83 people died because of head injuries. He said that among those who died, only 4 wore safety helmets.

AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave government is running out of idea to create public awareness through education and create laws to protect Cambodian people from dying! What can I say about AH HUN SEN corrupted government and his third world mentality and the results over the years are obvious because AH HUN SEN government had failed Cambodian people miserably again and again! This fucken issue of traffic accident never seems to go away!

Third world mentality = dictatorship = corruption = death!

The problem will only ever get better with enforcing the laws (without bribes being paid to get away free, enforcing a mandatory helmet law and making sure drivers are licenced and have insurance - yes it's going to cost a lot but dying costs everyone - most importantly the victims family - a lot more. The solutions are simple but need government action. There's no way around it and sooner or later they will wake up and realise they can't keep things going like this. Hey an easy first step would be to stop more than two people being on a moving moto at once and howabout introducing some simple incentives to get people back on bicycles. It would help with polution and carbon emissions all in one go.

Yes good idea - the Govt. should ask their Chinese backers to send thousands of bicycles and make them available free of charge for people who need transportation. PP is small and everyone can get around on bicycles - look at Holland where even Govt. ministers go to work on bicycles. Introduce some bike lanes along main roads as well. It would be great to see all those ministers and their army of bodyguards cycling the streets to set a good example! Why do we need more Hummers and Lexus SUV's clogging the already saturated streets of PP - 3 years ago there was hardly ever a traffic jam in PP (except when an official convoy was taking over the roads for no reason whatsoever) now you can't move here between 7 -9am and again between 4 - 7pm.

I would love to see all those young kids who race around the streets forced to wear crash helmets and then see their messed up hairdos when they take their helmets off - actually they'd probably look better - Cambodian kids must have the worst haircuts of any country in the world!!!

well, make good driving practice and traffic orderly one of the important agenda in gov't reform because it can help save many lives as well as prevention the spread of deadly diseases in cambodia like tb, hep c, b, hiv/aids, cancer, etc...

1:48, we are currently reforming our traffic system and law. Everyone required to pass exam before they can use our road, but it will take time for people to get experience. Look at it this way: you are not a doctor until you get some experience after your med school, alright?

Well you are stretching the limits of credibility by suggesting drivers and doctors learnign curve is some way comprable - come on get real. Cut the crap - Cambodia has been whinging too long that it is too poor and it's people to poorly educated to understand traffic laws. Practice what you preach. Set the laws in motion, pay police properly so they don't demand bribes - and prosecute those found to be taking them, demand the use of helmets, ban more than two people on a moto, give the cops some money so they can work at nighttime - has anyone ever seen a cop in PP at night? Prosecute drunk drivers and ban the wankers who have illegal military, Nat. Assembly and UNO plates. Then stop psuedo-officials from running red lights and driving down the wrong side of the road because they feel they can get away with it! Then the task of making PP's streets safer will be a lot easier.

Put all students on bicycles instead of motos until they are 18 would be a cool move too. Come on CPP you can control the media, control the opposition, control the aid money, control the investments, control the management of the economy, control deforestation (if you wanted to)... so how hard is it to control these young fly-boys who tear up the streets, cause havock on the roads day and night and make everyone's experience of being in the capital a nightmare??? or is it because they are your sons that you do nothing???

No problemo, mate (9:07), you can count on us. The next time those fools pull any stun on our street, they will certainly to regret it big time.
