Cambodia has announced plans to become one of the world's major rice exporters, and is hoping to reach an export target of some eight million tonnes.
Cambodia's ambitions to increase exports follows Sunday's announcement by Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej that his country won't cut down on rice exports.
The International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines welcomed the initiatives by both governments, and says such moves could help quell the panic that's gripped the international rice market.

As I have been saying all along, you can never have enough rice for everyone.
I am wondering why Cambodia does not export rice by ourself instead of just sell to VN and Thailand. I think we give our rice to them and they become the world's leader of rice exporting. Cambodia get nothing.
Nope, we get the same no matter where we exported to.
In the past the Thaicong and the Vietcong exported Cambodian rice to international market but now if Cambodian aim to export rice themselves and they will certainly have more profit margin according to international market price!
Actually, our plan is to form something like opec of the rice industry in the future.
