LYON, France – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior for Cambodia, Mr Sar Kheng today reinforced his country’s commitment to global police co-operation and particularly the fight against counterfeit pharmaceuticals, during a visit to the INTERPOL General Secretariat.
Deputy Prime Minister Kheng, meeting with INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald K. Noble, pledged his full support for a joint initiative between INTERPOL, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Customs Organization (WCO) targeting the manufacture and distribution across Southeast Asia of fake medicines for life-threatening diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.
The project comes under the umbrella of the International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force (IMPACT) which in addition to INTERPOL, WHO and WCO brings together national police, customs, public health authorities, drug regulatory bodies and health charities. Operations specifically targeting this illegal trade in Southeast Asia will be launched by INTERPOL and its partners in the very near future and for this reason Cambodia’s strong support is welcomed.
“Cambodia is committed to working with its law enforcement partners, not only in Southeast Asia but across the world, to fight the problem of counterfeit medicines which is why we are pleased to support all efforts to target those criminal organizations which profit from the misery of innocent people,” said Deputy Prime Minister Kheng.
Cambodia also offered to host a meeting to support and facilitate international co-operation in combating the production and distribution of counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
“I would like to thank the Deputy Prime Minister for his personal willingness and commitment to the fight against the counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals which is a national and global problem,” said Secretary General Noble.
“Cambodia already has demonstrated its commitment at the national level to protecting its citizens from the dangers of counterfeit pharmaceuticals by its creation of a specific office to deal with this type of crime; we thus welcome its willingness to work with us more closely at the international level in combating the production and distribution of fake medicines.”
Other issues discussed during the visit included Cambodia’s support during Operation Vico – INTERPOL’s first ever public appeal to identify a suspected unknown child sex offender. Through the diligent and professional work of its police with the co-operation of its citizens, additional child victims allegedly sexually abused by Christopher NEIL have now been identified.
Secretary General Noble praised the Cambodian authorities’ ongoing efforts to protect children from abuse by travelling sex offenders.
