Extreme Khmer 14: Surin Kantreum

Ta Frank returns to the land of the "Northern Khmer" to interview the legendary Kantreum singer Nam Pheung Muang Surin. Be sure to check out the full-length live versions of several of the songs featured in this episode, both on YouTube and in the "Ephemera" section of studykhmer.com.

Kantreum "Arapiyaa" by Nam Pheung Muang Surin

This is from a live concert in Surin in August, 2007...the great traditional Kantreum singer Nam Pheung Muang Surin actually makes the usually pedestrian and stiff central Khmer favorite "Arapiyaa" ROCK!

Spirit Posession song by Nam Pheung Muang Surin
This is from a live concert in August, 2007...the great traditional Kantreum singer Nam Pheung and her young students perform a song about spirit possession...danced quite convincingly by one of her students!

Thanks, Frank for this episode of the interview, the spirit of khmerness is high in Nak Kru Nam Pheung Muang Surin. It's an eye opening to see how she dedicated her life to keep the Khmer tradition. Her effort ought to be applauded, she is Nari Kumru for the Khmer mainland who embraces modernization at the expense of Khmer tradition. Khmer Kondal has lost forever Surin and Khmer Krom. We are on the verge of a minority in our own land!

yes, please help keep the khmer identity and language alive even in khmer leu and khmer krom. we are only separate by modern boundary for administration purposes, but culture and identity can stay forever no matter where we go live, etc. god bless khmer people.
