During the two-month rice export ban, last week, the government of Cambodia distributed $10 million in loan to rice buying companies and rice millers association to buy rice in order to prevent the upcoming dry season rice crop from being sold for export. Sun Kunthor, director of the Rural Development Bank, indicated that the $10 million loan was issued with low interest rate, and the amount was divided into 3 different main groups: $4 million to rice millers, $4 million to the Green Trade rice company, and $2 million to banks. Sun Kunthor indicated that he hopes this amount will help farmers sell rice at the free market price without sustaining any loss. Thun Virak, the director of the foreign trade of the Ministry of Commerce (MoC), indicated that, currently, rice that the MoC buys from farmers is purchased at the free market price, i.e. between 900 to 950 riels per kilo of rice with husk on, and the purchase is done door to door, and it is transported to the rice mill directly.
