Lockheed Martin has announced that the VINASAT-1 communications satellite, designed and built by the company for Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group is ready for launch on April 18, 2008, aboard an Ariane 5-ECA launch vehicle provided by Arianespace.

According to Lockheed Martin, the VINASAT-1 is based on its A2100A spacecraft platform and features 12 operating Ku Band transponders providing coverage over Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and part of Myanmar.

The spacecraft also features eight C-Band primary transponders providing coverage over Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Southeast Asia, India, Japan and Australia. VINASAT-1 is designed for a minimum service life of 15 years and will be located at orbital slot 132 degrees east.

The turnkey satellite system is expected to improve telecommunications in Vietnam by transmitting radio, television and telephone communications to all corners of the country. In addition, VINASAT-1 will improve communication networks infrastructure.

Vinasat-1 life-span of between 15 and over 20 years! Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) will recoup the investment after nine or 10 years!

Oh come! AH HUN SEN wasted $500 million dollars a year in corruption and what it cost about 300 million dollars just to build and to put a small Vinasat-1 into space!

"Lockheed Martin-Built VINASAT-1 and launch into space using rocket Ariane-5 by French company Ariane Space in Kourou site in French Guiana."

I am not impressed by the Vietcong achievement and if Cambodia has the money and they can pay the satellite expert to build for them too!

That is full of crock, Cambodia did not lose 500 millions/yr. That is pollitically exaggerated. We really lost no more than 100-130 millions top.

In any case, the satellites may cost 300 millions, but what about the rockets to send it to space, and what about the ground control station, and what about the crew to keep an eye on it? Those are not free, you know?
