Menu dispute lands Thai chef in hot water in Cambodia

Phnom Penh - A menu dispute between a Thai chef and the Cambodian restaurant manager led to a severe beating for the Thai, local media reported Friday.

Khmer-language Koh Santepheap daily reported the dispute started when chef Y Noy, 55, bought some new seafood ideas to the attention of the Cambodian manager of Asean Beer restaurant, named only as Nor.

Underwhelmed by the response he received from the Cambodian to injecting some Thai flair, Noy decided to eat his creations himself.

The paper said Nor then accused Noy of stealing the food and ordered several wait staff to chase the Thai into his bedroom and beat him in a concerted and vicious attack.

Food is a frequent bone of contention between Thais and Cambodians, with both claiming superiority and authenticity.

Noy, who had been resident in the north-western city of Battambang, 300 kilometres from the capital, for 10 years, received medical attention but it was unclear if charges would be laid.

This is a stupid Cambodia restaurant manager's act against his Thai chef. He doesn't know how to manage the restaurant. If the chef has a new idea of the food he created, the manager should try his creation and decide if it is worth to sell it. The menu might serve customer in the new flavor.

This manager should be fired by his owner. He acts like a mafia.

Dumb as khmer manager. You can't just order someone to beat up somebody like that, especially about food.

Another Khmer making Khmer people look like idiots.
Shame on him and shame on those who tolerate such stupid behavior.

talk about disrespect for the restaurant manager. fire him as he can't even cooperate and listen to the advice of the manager. maybe it's the thai attitude thing, here. we don't need this kind of people here in cambodia.

Why isn't he brought to court? Oh yes because the courts are corrupt they are only politically used by the government of HUN SEN. Corruption breeds hatred because if people could do whatever they want, in this case beat a man for his ideas, then society will not improve nor will the living standards and our enemies will just hate us even more. But wait, isn't that the master plan of one of our greatest enemies in history? To make us hate each other and split us and disentigrate us till we are 'minority'? You can't just blame Hun Sen for our social downfall, the blame is on Vietnam Hanoi, and you can't blame Pol Pot for getting into power, the real instigator are the fucking Viet Cong Yuons.

Listen you responders. I do not take sides at all. I do not know all "the minute details" in this incident. I don't see why the Thai only consume his own food he brought up to show the manager and got accused of stealing and severely beaten. No one of us know the whole "small details". So, do not quickly jump into conclusion. Because sometimes when you begin to know the "whole truth" which sometimes comes in a long line of story then you would be embarrassed by your quick action in jumping to the conclusion. I don't take side with bad people either Cambodians or Thais. But be caucious of the minute details.
